The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA or “the agency”) connects San Franciscans with their communities to enhance the economy, environment and, ultimately, the quality of life in the city. As an agency within the City and County of San Francisco, the SFMTA is responsible for managing the city’s transportation network. The agency has more than 6,000 employees who are responsible for the management of all ground and some underground transportation in the city. The SFMTA has oversight over public transit, as well as bicycling, paratransit, parking and curb management, street operations, walking, and taxis.

Role description

5380 - Intern Qualification: College sophomore or higher. 

Participate in design review, project planning and engineering maintenance support for electrical distribution utility in support of light rail vehicle, electric trolleys, historic street car, SF Cable Car and battery charging electric infrastructure. Review and update specifications and designs for new and existing infrastructure including substation, SCADA, underground and overhead power distribution. Participate in pre-construction meetings and design review process. Participates in electrical and rail safety training, understanding technician level work practices, applying NFPA, CPUC and OSHA regulations to work practices.  Reviews specifications and designs for maintenance and construction considerations. Projects include power conversion equipment, SCADA and Remote Terminal Unit operations, high tension catenary work, power control center operations, utility pole construction and maintenance, overhead catenary and underground utility power distribution, facility support including low voltage electrical, HVAC, fire alarm and battery charging equipment.

The intern will report to the operations manager, and interface with maintenance supervisor and superintendents, Maintenance of Way engineers, contractors and design and project engineers from Capital Projects and Construction.

Hands on multiple projects from small scale to multiple billion dollars, interfacing with a wide variety of decision makers on technical, project and political considerations. Will interface with many city departments and outside agencies and gain valuable experience interfacing with highly technical problems.

How to qualify

3rd year (junior) or higher in mechanical or electrical engineering, math or physics.

Interns follow the same telecommuting requirements as all City employees, with a requirement to work onsite at least three days per week (subject to change). Work at the office, fieldwork, outreach events, and field trips all count toward the onsite work requirement.

Intern salaries:  $33.2750/hr

Interns will also have free access to Muni for the duration of their internship.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:  All City and County of San Francisco employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of employment.
