For over 20 years, SF Environment has worked with San Francisco’s Black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) communities to mitigate environmental burdens, increase accessibility of environmental programs and benefits, engage community members, and improve health outcomes. BIPOC communities are disproportionately exposed to environmental stressors that include air and soil pollution, illegal dumping of toxics and other materials, industrial land uses and transportation impacts. They are more likely to live in housing conditions with limited access to green space and where poor indoor air quality from pests, mold, and the use of toxic products contributes to the prevalence of asthma and other health disparities. Role description

SF Environment is hiring for three (3) Assistant Community Engagement Coordinator positions.

1) Bilingual in Spanish and English
2) Bilingual in Cantonese and English
3) A third position focused on building relationships with San Francisco’s BIPOC community

The two (2) bilingual vacancies require bilingual proficiency in reading, writing, typing, speaking, and listening. Selected bilingual candidates must pass language proficiency and proofreading tests, and upon successful completion would be eligible for a bilingual pay stipend. 

All three Assistant Community Engagement Coordinators will support the City’s environmental goals by performing in-person and virtual outreach to the public, especially in communities most impacted by environmental stressors. This outreach is across a range of environmental areas such as zero waste, toxics reduction, energy efficiency, clean transportation, environmental justice, and climate action.

In the Assistant Community Engagement Coordinator role, you'll split your time between the office and the field. Approximately, sixty percent of your time will be spent in the office assisting with the design and coordination of community behavior-change campaigns, facilitating project training for entry-level trainee staff, and performing program administration, including data input and analysis using the Salesforce CRM platform. The remainder of your time will be spent in the field performing public outreach and building community partnerships through public speaking, attending community events, and visiting businesses and residents door-to-door. The relationships you make and the information you collect from the field will be used to measure project objectives and serve to inform future outreach campaign strategies. This position(s) reports to the Engagement Coordinator and will assist with mentoring up to five entry-level trainee staff.

Job Duties

According to Civil Service Commission Rule 109, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this class and are not intended to be an inclusive list.  

  • Conduct outreach to engage residents, businesses, and institutions in the City’s environmental policies and programs using a variety of tactics including, door-to-door canvassing, phone calls, facilitating training, event tabling, virtual and in-person presenting, email communication, and surveying 
  • Build and maintain partnerships with community-based organizations and serve as the department liaison to community stakeholders
  • Assist in leading, training, and developing a diverse, multi-lingual team of up to five employees, including leading and monitoring work and schedules
  • Assist with developing and leading outreach projects including coordination of special events in partnership with community groups
  • Analyze and evaluate public engagement projects to inform future strategies using Salesforce CRM and other data analytics tools  
  • Write campaign and project reports and present findings to relevant stakeholders, as assigned
  • Perform administrative support and other duties, as required 
  • Work a flexible schedule such as weekends and/or evenings with varying hours, as needed for department initiatives and campaigns
  • Conduct written translations and in-person interpretation to support outreach messaging [Language positions only and contingent on bilingual language capacity test]
  • May include additional duties as assigned.

Appointment Type

This position is a Temporary-Exempt Appointment, with an anticipated duration of 36 months. The position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive civil service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer.

Minimum Qualifications

Education - Possession of a baccalaureate degree in environmental sciences, public administration, business administration, or a field related to environmental outreach and communications (including but not limited to communications, community organizing, community development, or behavioral science), from an accredited college or university; AND 

Experience - One (1) year of experience planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating environmental outreach programs; AND

License – Possession of a valid driver’s license

  • Experience conducting public outreach and developing community partnerships
  • Familiarity with San Francisco neighborhoods, community-based organizations, and supervisorial districts 
  • Experience coordinating and evaluating projects using qualitative and quantitative data analysis  
  • An interest in learning about and applying equity, inclusion, and diversity concepts. 
  • Willingness to drive a City-issued vehicle as needed (vehicle is provided)
  • For up to 40% of work time – ability to commute to neighborhoods in San Francisco to engage residents and businesses (may include walking, standing, and climbing stairs). Can be done with or without reasonable accommodation.
