Role description

SFO is looking for motivated interns to join our Career Advance Internship Program. As an SFO Career Advance Intern, you will gain valuable work experience while building your skills and playing a vital role in the operation of SFO!

Career Advance interns work in one of the many offices at the airport. Each intern will work directly with an SFO Mentor who will guide and develop them through daily tasks and larger-scale projects. Interns will also be given the opportunity to attend tours of SFO, Meet and Greets with Airport leadership, and other workshops and events aimed at professional development.

SFO is offering internship opportunities in the following areas:

  • Airport Director’s Office: As an Airport Director’s Office intern, you will have an opportunity to join our administrative professionals team working in a fast-paced office setting. You will support a range of general office duties that include providing front desk receptionist coverage, greeting guests and employees, answering, and transferring phone calls, managing conference room bookings, and other administrative functions as required.
  • Economic and Community Development: As an Economic and Community Development intern, you will support the collection of small business data, analysis, reporting, and outreach efforts. You will assist with projects such as the Annual SFO Resource Fair, an event designed to connect job seekers with Airport employers and provide businesses with access to information and opportunities, and contract readiness workshops to prepare small businesses to apply for the economic opportunities at SFO. Through this internship, you will have the opportunity to engage with SFO tenants and workers, while building a strong professional network in the SFO community. Check out the video of the SFO 2024 Resource Fair.
  • Emergency Management: As an Emergency Management intern, you will work with a team of professional emergency coordinators and support the development and upkeep of emergency plans, procedures, and other guiding documents. You will assist in training initiatives and attend meetings with governmental agencies, and other emergency personnel. You will also support the routine inspection of Emergency Management training facilities, including SFO’s Mobile Command Vehicle, Boeing 767 training aircraft, and the Emergency Operations Center (EOC).
  • Environmental Operations: You will have an opportunity to learn about SFO's robust sustainability program and complex environmental operations. The Environmental Operations teams ensure SFO meets its high operational standards for resource conservation, emissions reduction, recycled water use, domestic water and wastewater compliance, spill management, emerging contaminates, pest management and material diversion. You will gain experience facilitating, developing, implementing, and integrating environmental practices across all operations and multiple stakeholders. You will provide "boots-on-the-ground" service and support for a range of environmental programs that help the Airport reach its sustainability goals, including the Bay Pollution Prevention Program, the Green Business Program, and Zero Waste Concessions initiatives. You will also conduct and train staff on zero waste and pollution prevention practices, as well as participate in the Airport’s annual Zero Waste Characterization.
  • Marketing and Communications: As the “MarComm” intern, you will work side-by-side with a creative team of content creators and communicators in a fast-paced and fun environment. You will have the chance to learn and develop front-end website content creation and management skills, front end Drupal management and styling techniques, and how to work with a programming team to take ideas from concepts to published web pages and other digital experiences. You will also have the opportunity to learn and develop skills in social media, video and photo production, creative writing, paid digital advertising campaigns, and search engine optimization.
  • Signage & Wayfinding: Learn the ins and outs of Signage & Wayfinding at SFO and how we work to improve the guest experience through feedback and testing. You will have the opportunity for meaningful input in signage decisions, reviewing requests, assessing needs and developing graphics and signage installation plans as needed.

  • Talent Mobility: The Talent Mobility team oversees SFO’s Career Pathway Programs (internships, apprenticeships, trainee programs and fellowships) and supports internal mobility through professional development services, learning, and initiatives. As a Talent Pipeline Program Team Leader, you will contribute to the success of SFO by supporting SFO’s Career Pathway programs. Tasks include assisting with onboarding and offboarding program participants, organizing workshops, developing, issuing, and monitoring surveys, creating marketing communications, event planning, attending job fairs and networking events, supporting career readiness activities and tours, creating handbooks, conducting outreach, and managing volunteer coordination.
