Established in 1980 by the Airport Commission, SFO Museum’s mission is to delight, engage, and inspire a global audience with programming on a broad range of subjects; to collect, preserve, interpret, and share the history of commercial aviation; and to enrich the public experience at San Francisco International Airport. The Museum has been accredited by the American Alliance of Museums since 1999 and retains the distinction of being the only accredited museum in an airport. The Museum operates more than twenty-five sites throughout the Airport terminals, including fourteen galleries that exhibit a rotating schedule of art, history, photography, science, and cultural exhibitions. Among the sites is the San Francisco Airport Commission Aviation Library and Louis A. Turpen Aviation Museum, which houses a permanent collection of more than 150,000 objects related to the history of commercial aviation. Role description

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) Museum, the only museum at an airport accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, seeks a highly motivated individual to lead the curatorial, design, and preparation teams in advancing the organization’s mission to delight, engage; to collect, preserve, interpret, and share the history of commercial aviation; and inspire a global audience with programming on a broad range of subjects and to enrich the public experience at San Francisco International Airport.


Under administrative direction from the Director and Chief Curator, the Assistant Director, Exhibitions, manages the Exhibition division of the SFO Museum. The position is responsible for directing, making decisions, and overseeing the day-to-day activities and functions of the Exhibitions division, which encompasses the curatorial, design, and preparator teams. Primary responsibilities include developing, establishing, implementing, and enforcing exhibition policies, procedures, methods, and objectives to ensure consistent aesthetic and design quality, equitable subject matter representation, and appropriateness for the Airport’s general audience. You will also be directing the development, design, organization, and implementation of more than forty exhibitions annually. The position plays an important role in assisting the Director and Chief Curator in determining gallery design and placement within Airport terminals as construction or renovation occurs and may supervise and/or curate special projects.


This position is a senior member of the Museum’s management team and works with all levels of Museum and Airport staff, and local, domestic, and international individuals and organizations. The ideal candidate has an equitable and thoughtful approach to management and problem-solving; excellent verbal and written communication skills; a collaborative mindset; a strong sense of accountability.


The essential functions of this classification include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Designs, authors, and installs exhibits; coordinates and balances exhibition workflow; maintains and improves standards of excellence in all exhibition efforts.
  2. Directs, develops, and manages new and existing programs and facilities for SFO Museum.
  3. Oversees, directs, and manages work and performance of the Curators, Exhibition Designer, Photographer, Graphic Designer/Webmaster, and Videographer responsible for generating exhibitions and educational programs throughout the Airport exhibition subject selection; proofreads and copyedits all exhibition text.
  4. Collaborates/coordinates with colleagues responsible for the preparation of the Museum’s exhibitions, including the Head of Preparation, Production Supervisor, Acting Shop Supervisor, Senior Preparators, On-Call Preparators, and representatives of other City departments to plan, develop, and implement projects.
  5. Identifies and solicits exhibition partners and lenders; locates and selects exhibition objects and material; generates label text and coordination of related presentation of imagery on gallery signage, labels, the publication(s), and the website.
  6. Manages the production of special Airport design and/or display projects.
  7. Partners with Airport colleagues and project managers in the design and construction of new galleries within the Airport’s terminals.
  8. Serves on various Museum and Airport committees and working groups. May function as Museum Director and assume responsibility for all functions and activities of the Museum in the absence of the Director and Chief Curator.
  9. Serve as a partner to the Director and Chief Curator in support of their vision and ensuring the successful iteration and implementation of the Museum’s strategic plan.
  10. Develops, prepares, analyzes, and presents budget proposals, and reports to the Museum Director; directs budget allocations and adjustments if necessary to ensure Exhibitions priorities are met.
  11. May include additional duties as assigned.

How to qualify

EDUCATION: Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. AND

EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years of museum and/or public art experience developing and producing exhibitions.

SUBSTITUTION: Education Substitution: Additional experience as described above may be substituted for the required degree on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two (2) years.  Thirty (30) semester units or forty-five (45) quarter units equal one (1) year.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: 

The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred to hiring.

  • Five (5) or more years of demonstrated exhibition project management experience in a museum or gallery setting, inclusive of maintaining and working within budget and timeline limitations.
  • Three (3) years of experience supervising professionals in the museum environment.
  • Knowledge of museum lighting requirements and technology.
  • Experience and dedication to visual and written detail, accuracy, and neat execution of work.
  • Experience working in a fast-moving and dynamic environment.

Note: One-year full-time employment is equivalent to 2000 hours (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hours work week.)  Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Clearance


Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission are required to undergo a criminal history record check, including FBI fingerprints, and Security Threat Assessment in order to determine eligibility for security clearance and may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening.  Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1, every applicant for an examination must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for the examination.  Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be the basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission.

After application submission, candidates deemed qualified must complete all subsequent steps to advance in this selection process, which includes the following:

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ) (Weight: Qualifying): Candidates will be required to complete MQSQ as part of the employment application. This MQSQ is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications (MQ) for this position. The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.

Supervisory Test Battery (Weight: 40%).  

Candidates will be administered a written multiple-choice examination that is designed to measure basic knowledge of various supervisory practices and procedures (e.g., directing, counseling, guiding, evaluating, motivating, disciplining, developing, and training subordinates, delegation) as well as customer service and reading comprehension. This is a standardized examination and, therefore, test questions and test answers are not available for public inspection or review. The Supervisory Test Battery will be administered either on a computer or in paper format. The type of format will depend on the size of the qualified applicant pool. Qualified candidates will be notified of the type of exam format in their exam appointment notification. The score you achieve on this examination shall be valid and 'banked' for three years, starting from the date of the examination. This means that, during this three-year time period, you will not be required to take this test again should you apply and be found eligible for a future announcement for which this particular test is used. Please note this test is used for other supervisory classes therefore your test score may be applied to one or more of these classes if you choose to apply to future recruitments. If the test for this future announcement is held within one year of the date of this examination, your score will be automatically applied to that announcement. However, after one year, you have the option to either (a) apply your test score to the other announcement or (b) re-take the test. Re-testing is permitted no sooner than one year from the date of the examination and only in association with your eligibility for another announcement for which this test is used. Please note that, should you re-test, your re-test score would become your official score since it is the most recent.

Training and Experience Evaluation (Weight: 60%)

Candidates will be administered a supplemental questionnaire to determine their possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the position of Assistant Director Museum Exhibitions - 0923 (SFO). All relevant experience, education, and/or training must be on the application in order to be reviewed in the rating process.

Note: A passing score on both the Training and Experience Evaluation and the Supervisory Test Battery must be achieved in order to be placed/ranked on the Eligible List. 

What else should I know?

Eligible List/Score Report: A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores, and the number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.

Certification: The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be Rule of the List. Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.
