Role description

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has unique internship programs and hosts interns year-round.  Interns will work part-time, up to 32 hours per week for eight weeks.  Interns work directly with an SFO Mentor who will supervise daily tasks and larger-scale projects. This year, SFO is offering internship opportunities in the following areas:

Airside Operations: As an Airside Operations Intern, you will learn about the responsibility of the Airside Operations department within the broader scope of airport operations. Throughout this 8-week program, you will gain hands-on experience with Airfield Safety Officers, such as opening and closing runways and taxiways, providing vehicle escorts, and responding to incidents throughout the airfield. The Airside Operations Intern will gain an understanding of Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) Part 139 and Part 1592 compliance as well as construction planning and logistics. You will also gain firsthand knowledge of the airport's wildlife mitigation program and airport-issued Notice to Airmen or Notice to Air Missions (NOTAMs). In addition, this internship provides an opportunity to learn about how Airside Operations interacts with other airport departments to ensure the safety and security of the traveling public.

Aviation Security: As an Aviation Security Intern, you will be part of a team and learn about our daily operation, ensuring the Airport's Federal Regulatory Compliance. The Aviation Security Intern will gain hands-on experience with construction projects and planning and conducting an Aviation Security Tabletop Exercise in which multiple agencies participate. In addition, this internship provides an opportunity to participate in planning and hosting multi-agency meetings hosted by Aviation Security.  In addition, you will be able to assist in the Administrative duties such as updating, formatting, and maintaining the Airport Security Program. You will receive training in, and help with invoice processing, purchase order management/reconciliation, routing of confidential documents, and much more!

Marketing & Communications: No two days are ever the same in the MarComm department with responsibilities that run the gamut from corporate and internal communications to marketing campaigns to project management. You’ll work side-by-side with SFO’s Marketing & Communications team in a fast paced and fun environment, allowing you the opportunity to grow your experience, hone your understanding, and apply your skills to real-time, meaningful projects and assignments.
The MarComm intern will complete a project that supports SFO, but that is tailored around personal interests and skills. Past projects have included: producing an episode of Inside SFO, writing a social media strategy paper, developing new sections of flysfo.com, and developing a video script and shot list.  Projects and assignments can include: writing articles, conducting interviews, taking pictures, shooting video, posting content on websites and social media, interpreting marketing and social media analytics.  To succeed the intern must have excellent communications skills, strong writing skills, an attention to detail, and familiarity with social media, photography and video production, web development and design. Creative and willing to learn.

Safety and Heath: As a Safety and Health intern, you will assist in performing site visits and maintaining safety supplies and equipment; meeting with employees to follow-up on safety concerns; maintaining various databases, monitoring appointments, and safety data sheets; assisting with the coordination of safety and health training programs; reviewing and updating training content and employee training files; participating in ergonomic assessments; conducting basic safety inspections; assisting in the ordering and tracking of safety purchases; assisting with industrial hygiene monitoring; and performing other duties as required.
