Role description

SFERS is seeking a talented, highly motivated Fellow who has demonstrated significant academic achievement and an interest in gaining invaluable knowledge and experience in SFERS’ investment efforts within Private Markets, which includes Real Assets (Real Estate, Infrastructure, Natural Resources) and Private Equity (Buyouts, Venture Capital, Growth Equity). These portfolios currently represent approximately $16 billion of SFERS’ total assets. The Fellow will initially work with the Real Assets team and will have the opportunity to work across other private asset classes through the course of the fellowship.

Duties will primarily focus on assisting Investment Staff with portfolio monitoring and construction. Knowledge and experience of using data analysis tools such as Power BI, RStudio, SQL, and Excel are strongly preferred but are not necessary. The Fellow will assist with developing and creating a streamlined process that allows Investment Staff to better monitor portfolio changes over time. Portfolio and investment analyses can include benchmarking analysis, risk/return analysis, scenario analysis, sensitivity analysis, and commitment pacing analysis among others. Ideally, the Fellow will need to be familiar with one or more data analysis and visualization tools to excel at the project. Additionally, the Fellow may be invited to fund manager meetings and internal discussions to gain broad exposure to the industry.

Examples of essential functions of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Familiarize oneself with the ongoing data feeds from various SFERS providers (custodian, consultants, fund managers) that may need to be transformed into useable, consistent format;
  • Develop and create data analysis, best practices, and visualization tools that can be automated for routine Investment Staff use and reports;
  • Assist in the evaluation of investment opportunities, including meeting with investment managers, performing qualitative and quantitative analysis, and preparing detailed investment memoranda for SFERS’ Investment Board;
  • Assist in the internal process for monitoring existing and potential investments;
  • Conduct ad hoc analysis and research;
  • Present to Investment Staff findings from data analysis and general observations at the end of project term;
  • May perform additional duties as assigned.

Training will be provided by SFERS Investment Staff. Upon completion of this fellowship, the experience gained will be deemed as qualified experience towards the minimum qualifications for an Investment Analyst position (Job Code 4331). The anticipated duration of the fellowship is 18 months.
