About:

What We Do: The Mayor’s Office of Public Policy and Finance is seeking a Fiscal & Policy Analyst, directly reporting to the Mayor’s Budget Director. The primary responsibility of the Mayor’s Office of Public Policy and Finance is to prepare and submit a balanced City budget in June of each year. Other functions of the Mayor’s Office of Public Policy and Finance include: participating in development and monitoring of the administration’s policy initiatives; synthesizing information about budget issues and government operations into clear messaging for City stakeholders; and, working on fiscal impacts related to legislative issues.

Role description

What You’ll Be Doing: The Fiscal & Policy Analyst is responsible for performing detailed analysis of complex departmental budgets both as part of the annual budget review and throughout the year; building and maintaining relationships with departments and stakeholders; and, preparing and presenting policy and budget recommendations to the Mayor’s Budget Director and other Mayoral staff.

As a Fiscal & Policy Analyst, you will review and analyze annual budget submissions of city departments; prepare and present policy and budget recommendations; monitor department spending and hiring over the course of the year; and act as key contact for budget, policy, and program matters between the Mayor’s Office and city departments. As part of this work, you will often need to summarize complex information and present your summary to decisionmakers.

How to qualify

Minimum Qualifications: Strong analytical, interpersonal, and writing skills; comfort with analyzing numbers; ability to work well under pressure and with a variety of individuals, including city department staff and Mayor’s Office policy staff; computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Excel. 3+ years of relevant experience or advanced degree (MA, MPP, MPA) in public policy or related field. Please note that the team has a combination of those with and without graduate degrees, and professional experience and education are valued equally.

Preferred Qualifications: Familiarity with San Francisco Bay Area and/or local resident. Experience in public policy and/or budgeting.

Current compensation plan:

Annual :$89,466- $108,732

Working Hours:  Full-time, 40 hours/week. Additional hours may be required to complete assignments, as needed. In particular, this team works longer hours, including frequent evenings and weekends, during the busiest months of the budget season (March through June). Note: this job is based in San Francisco City Hall with a hybrid work schedule. As of September 5, 2022, employees will be required to be in-office a minimum of three days per week.
