About:

The Convention Facilities Department oversees the Moscone Center, a campus of three buildings covering more than 20 acres on three adjacent blocks. The City-owned Moscone Center is one of the country’s premier destinations for conventions, meetings, and tradeshows.  It is one of the nation’s few LEED Platinum certified convention centers, offering over 1 million square feet of exhibition and meeting space and more than 25,000 square feet of outdoor terraces for receptions. The day-to-day operation and management of the Moscone Center is handled by ASM Global under contract with the City and County.  ASM Global is the world’s leading venue management and services company.

Prior to the COVID pandemic, Moscone Center hosted 49 conventions in 2019 and spending by San Francisco’s convention and meetings industry accounted for $1.9 billion of economic activity.

Role description

The Convention Services Coordinator will be primarily responsible for working with city department liaisons and community partners to implement a day-to-day operations plan that supports convention activity at Moscone Center and in the surrounding area. This role is part of a team working to retain and revitalize convention business in San Francisco and help support the city’s overall economic recovery. We are seeking individuals who are motivated and ready to help ensure a coordinated and consistent focus on providing a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for every convention visitor to San Francisco.

Essential Functions:

  • Organize coordination activities, such as pre-convention client meetings, daily briefings, and post-event close-out sessions with City department liaisons and Community Benefit District staff
  • Recommend Operations Plan adjustments based on post-event analysis to improve department coordination and make other changes that promote a clean, safe, and welcoming experience for convention attendees and visitors
  • Coordinate communications between key stakeholders and partners
  • Develop, manage, and analyze attendee and planner satisfaction surveys; Make recommendations for program, policy, and operations changes as the result of survey analysis, as well as from review of industry studies and comparisons to other convention centers
  • Assist in connecting event planners with City representatives who may speak at their conference; information about specific SF initiatives as requested; and/or SF community service activities that attendees may want to join
  • Coordinate with local businesses for awareness and welcome messaging related to Moscone conventions
  • Work with Moscone Center, Yerba Buena Gardens Conservancy, Yerba Buena Community Benefit District, Union Square Alliance, and other organizations to increase activation and beautification initiatives in the Moscone area
  • Explore creation of an internship program with participants through SF State’s Hospitality program and other programs to support attendee survey, activation programming, and other convention-related activities
  • Perform other duties as assigned

How to qualify

1. Possession of a graduate degree (Master's degree or higher) from an accredited college or university and three (3) years of full-time equivalent experience performing professional level analytical work as described in Note A: OR

2. Possession of a graduate degree (Master's degree or higher) from an accredited college or university with major college coursework as described in Note B and two (2) years full-time equivalent experience performing professional level analytical work as described in Note A; OR

3. Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and four (4) years full-time equivalent experience performing professional level analytical work as described in Note A; OR

4. Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with major college coursework as described in Note B and three (3) years full-time equivalent performing professional level analytical work as described in Note A

SUBSTITUTION: Applicants may substitute up to 2 years of the required education with additional qualifying experience in budget analysis, financial analysis and reporting, legislative/policy analysis, or contract/grant administration. One year (2000 hours) of additional qualifying experience will be considered equivalent to 30 semester units/45 quarter units.

Notes on Qualifying Experience and Education:

A. Qualifying professional-level analytical experience must be in one or more of the following functional areas: complex budget analysis, development and administration; complex financial/fiscal analysis and reporting; development of complex contracting systems and administration of competitive bid processes and complex contractual agreements; development and evaluation of complex management/administrative policy; complex grant administration and monitoring; complex program evaluation and planning; complex legislative analysis; complex economic analysis; or other functional areas related to the duties of positions in Class 1823, where the primary focus of the job is complex professional-level analysis for evaluation, recommendation, development and implementation of major programs and functions of department/organization. Analytical experience equivalent to the duties of Class 1822 is considered qualifying.

B. Coursework applicable to a baccalaureate or higher degree in specialized subject matter areas such as public or business administration, management, business law, contract law, public policy, urban studies, economics, statistical analysis, finance, accounting or other fields of study closely related to the essential functions of positions in Class 1823.

Compensation: $110,630 to $134,446 annually
