About:

The Department of Public Health is seeking applicants for Activity Director of the Mental Health Rehabilitation Center (MHRC) at the San Francisco Behavioral Health Center (SFBHC). The MHRC Activity Director plans, coordinates, and implements an activities program on a daily basis to meet the individual client's needs and interests.

Role description

Essential Duties Include

  • Communicates with clients to check on physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.
  • Establishes and maintains a therapeutic milieu by developing the activity program to enhance client success in the community.
  • Assists in the management of assaultive, disruptive, or suicidal behavior.
  • Participates as a team member in crisis intervention.
  • Develops, implements, and supervises the activity program including the following but not limited to:
    • Social activities
    • Indoor and outdoor activities
    • Activities away from the facility
    • Religious activities
    • Opportunities for clients’ involvement in planning and implementation of the activity program
    • Creative activities, which include arts and crafts
    • Educational activities
    • Special events/holiday programming
    • Evaluation of each client for activity needs.
    • Develops and maintains appropriate records, which indicate client attendance and participation in the program with reference to client responses to the program.
  • Requests and maintain equipment and supplies.
  • Establishes an active volunteer program, which includes screening, training, and supervision of volunteers. (May also assist in screening, training, and supervision of contract employees hired under a grant on a temporary basis).
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings and in-service training programs.
  • Develops methods for effective utilization of community resources.
  • Posts the current activity/group schedule for clients and staff.
  • Documents initial and ongoing activities assessments.
  • Notifies the treatment team of recommendations and plans for implementation regarding recreation.
  • Implements and supervises fundraising activities.
  • Participates in grant-writing and oversight of the implementation of grants for the department in collaboration with the MHRC Program Director.

How to qualify

⚠ Required Before Applying 

  • Possession of a valid Occupational Therapy License issued by the California Board of Occupational Therapy (CBOT); 
    OR
  • Acceptance by the California Board of Occupational Therapy for the next examination of the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy.
    AND
  • 2 years of experience in a social or recreational program within the last 5 years*
    • 1 year of which was full-time in client activities and programs in a mental health setting*

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience working in an ethnically, culturally, and sexually diverse organization.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Proficient in word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills.

What else should I know?

Electronic Health Record (EHR)
The Department of Public Health (DPH) is implementing a unified Electronic Health Record (EHR) system and DPH employees must demonstrate competency in the use of the system that is appropriate for their classification as a condition of employment.  

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Some positions in the Department of Public Health will require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to gloves, gowns, eye and face protection, and face-fitting respirators. The requirement for the use of PPE may come on short or no notice. Facial hair or any condition that interferes with a face-fitting respirator’s seal (i.e., weakens the seal between the respirator and the wearer’s bare skin) is not permitted when face-fitting respirators are worn, including during initial or periodic respirator fit-testing.  

Employees who choose not to shave and do not have either American Disabilities Act (ADA) or Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Accommodations do not have the right to alternate work assignments or the option of using a loose-fitting Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) in place of a Face Fitting Respirator.  

Medical Examination
Prior to appointment, at the Department’s expense, applicants may be required to take a tuberculosis (TB) screening test, medical examination, and/or drug test.
