About:

The San Francisco Department of Public Health’s Information Technology Division is the technology services provider within Public Health, delivering technology infrastructure and services to approximately 10,000 users within the organization to help support over 100,000 patients annually.

We are seeking a Principal Engineer to join our Convergent Technologies Team (CT). This is a Permanent Exempt position within the IT division.

Role description

Under general direction of the Convergent Technologies Supervisor, the Principal Engineer performs infrastructure upgrades, application upgrades and application administration of our Cisco Unified Communications portfolio, as well as our other healthcare related systems such as RTLS and nurse call.

Additional duties include, but are not limited to, training, documentation, systems integration, interfacing with users, working with DPH programs, collaborating with other IT groups and break-fix activities.

This position will also participate in Convergent Technologies related projects for new implementations or existing system enhancements.

This position will support multiple DPH sites and business units throughout the City & County of San Francisco and may also participate in the CT after-hours standby rotation.

Essential Duties Include

  1. Principal level Unified Communications systems architecture, implementation, and engineering support.
  2. Evaluate Unified Communications and Contact Center technologies and make recommendations based on business requirements. 
  3. Collaborate on migration, and support for future Unified Communications and Contact Center sites across the department.
  4. Support existing carrier SIP trunks at each datacenter and multiple SIP integrations with 3rd party applications.
  5. Provide engineering support for multiple UCCX Contact Center applications.
  6. Troubleshoot complex systems supporting Unified Communications and Collaboration, Clinical Communications and RTLS.
  7. Coordinate multi-vendor support for the technical and administrative resolution of technology issues.
  8. Provide operational support to DPH locations already utilizing our Unified Communications portfolio
  9. Establish and maintain good working relations with department personnel, staff, vendors, peers, and management.
  10. Maintain system and user documentation and training materials.
  11. Perform related duties and responsibilities, as required.

How to qualify

  • An associate degree in computer science or a closely related field from an accredited college or university OR its equivalent in terms of total course credits/units [i.e., at least sixty (60) semesters or ninety (90) quarter credits/units with a minimum of twenty (20) semester or thirty (30) quarter credits/units in computer science or a closely-related field].
    AND
  • Five (5) years of experience analyzing, installing, configuring, enhancing, and/or maintaining the components of an enterprise network.
  • One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours of work experience (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours a week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment. 
  • Education Substitution: Additional experience as described above may be substituted for the required degree on a year-for-year basis (up to a maximum of two (2) years). One (1) year is equivalent to thirty (30) semester units/ forty-five (45) quarter units with a minimum of 10 semester / 15 quarter units in computer science or a closely related field.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience with migrating legacy Avaya Digital PBX systems to Voice over IP.
  • VMware ESXi operational and upgrade experience.
  • Cisco Unified Communications application upgrade experience.
  • Experience with the following: Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM), Cisco Unity Connection (CUC), Cisco Emergency Responder (CER), Cisco Instant Messaging & Presence (IM&P), and Cisco Unified Contact Center Express (UCCX).
  • Experience with Cisco Unified Border Element (CUBE).
  • Experience with Cisco Smart Licensing.
  • Experience with configuration/deployment/troubleshooting of Cisco analog voice Gateways (VG204, VG310, VG350 & VG400).
  • Experience configuring and troubleshooting wired and wireless VoIP endpoints.
  • Experience with Singlewire Informacast.
  • Operational experience configuring and troubleshooting SIP interfaces with other third-party clinical systems (e.g., nurse call or eFax applications).
  • Familiarity with ServiceNow for Incident Management, Request Management, Problem Management, and Change Control.
  • General knowledge of VoIP signaling protocols; SIP, SCCP and MGCP.
  • Recent experience working with healthcare information (e.g., Public Health, Epidemiology, Health Insurance) technology or within a clinical systems environment.
