About:

Appointment Type:  Temporary-Exempt.  This position is exempt from Civil Service Commission rules pursuant to the City and County of San Francisco, Charter Section 10.104, and incumbents serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer.  Duration of appointment is 36 months.

Established in 1980 by the Airport Commission, SFO Museum’s mission is to delight, engage, and inspire a global audience with programming on a broad range of subjects; to collect, preserve, interpret, and share the history of commercial aviation; and to enrich the public experience at San Francisco International Airport. The Museum has been accredited by the American Alliance of Museums since 1999 and retains the distinction of being the only accredited museum in an airport. The Museum operates more than twenty-five sites throughout the Airport terminals, including fourteen galleries that exhibit a rotating schedule of art, history, photography, science, and cultural exhibitions. Among the sites is the San Francisco Airport Commission Aviation Library and Louis A. Turpen Aviation Museum, which houses a permanent collection of more than 150,000 objects related to the history of commercial aviation. Role description

The 3542 Curator II, Video Arts Curator and Videographer, has two projects: managing and curating the Video Arts program and creating videos to be used on the Museum’s website and within exhibitions.  Emphasis within both projects is given to highlighting the roles of racial, gender, and identity diverse subject matter in support of the Museum’s and Airport’s goals towards achieving racial equity.

Under the direction of the Director and Chief Curator, in support of the Video Arts program, the position manages the process of artist outreach, film selection, modification to video files, and overseeing and managing the gallery’s equipment.  Under the direction of the Curator of Graphic Design, the position is responsible for storyboarding, filming, editing, and finalizing videos that deepen the understanding of the presented subject matter to be used on the museum’s website, social media channels, Airport display monitors, and within exhibitions.

This position works with all levels of Museum staff; local, domestic, and international filmmakers; and coordinates with various departments within the Airport, and outside individuals and organizations.

The ideal candidate has completed course work in film or electronic arts, is excited about filmmaking and filmmakers, and can successfully juggle multiple fast-moving projects.

The essential functions of this classification include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Curate and manage all related correspondence and documentation for four videos to be shown monthly in the Video Arts gallery;
  • Manage timelines and digital and physical assets of the Video Arts program;
  • Create storyboards and scripts in partnership with curators, graphic designers, preparators, exhibition designer, and/or other Museum staff;
  • Create video documentation of museum programs;
  • Create exhibition videos from still images and sourced videos;
  • Edit videos as part of museum production work and/or to produce short clips or excerpts;
  • Produce work with knowledge of open and closed captioning for the hearing impaired;
  • Produce and/or edit subtitles;
  • Select music for museum productions;
  • Post videos to museum YouTube channel and airport terminal kiosks;
  • Other duties, as assigned.

How to qualify

Education:

Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in the fine arts, art history, decorative arts, design, history, library science, museum studies, natural history, science, technology, or other closely related disciplines.

Experience:

Three (3) years of museum experience.

Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.

One year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Desirable Qualifications:

Any of the stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.

  • Knowledge of contemporary short-form fine art film and video artists;
  • Advanced skills in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Premiere Pro; Final Cut Pro; After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, and experience with Omnivex Moxie a plus.
  • Strong production and editorial skills;
  • Mac and PC proficient;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with volunteers, assistants, supervisor, Museum and Airport staff, outside agencies, and the public;
  • Demonstrated concern for detail, accuracy, and neat execution of work.

Selection Procedures:

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Clearance:
Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission are required to undergo a criminal history record check, including FBI fingerprints, and Security Threat Assessment in order to determine eligibility for security clearance and may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening. Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1, every applicant for an examination must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for the examination. Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission.
