About:

The San Francisco Department of Public Health's Maternal, Child & Adolescent Health (MCAH) Child Care Health Program (CCHP) is accepting applications for one (1), full-time trainee position in class 9910 Public Service Trainee (Dental Health Educator Trainee). 

The San Francisco MCAH Child Care Health Program (CCHP) provides health and safety consultation and outreach to underserved child care, family resource center and shelter sites throughout San Francisco to facilitate Medi-Cal enrollment and linkage of children ages 0-5 years old to needed health services, medical and dental homes.

This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer, and the duration of the positions shall not exceed 36 months.

Role description

Under general supervision of the Child Care Health Program (CCHP) Charge Nurse and Dental Hygienist, the Dental Health Educator Trainee (9910 Public Service Trainee) performs the following duties:

  • Assist and train in the development, promotion, implementation, and evaluation of CCHP’s midday toothbrushing program for preschool staff and 0-5-year-old children.
  • Train in pediatric oral health, perinatal oral health, fluoride, and other related topics to coordinate and lead parent oral health education sessions through workshops, health fairs, and other outreach activities.
  • Assist with coordinating and facilitating oral health “Train the Trainer” sessions for family resource center staff and provide staff with additional support with their trainings as needed.
  • Train in the CCHP preschool dental assessment procedures and fluoride varnish application to assist in all phases of preschool dental assessments, including: leading educational “circle times” for children, assisting to train volunteers in fluoride application process, and collecting dental screening results for community assessments and quality improvement.
  • Learns care coordination basics and motivational interviewing strategies to assist with dental referrals and case management calls to educate parents on the importance of regular dental care and to help parents make needed dental appointments for their children.
  • Support and assist all stages of managing oral health assessment data, including inputting consents and registration forms into EPIC electronic health record, as well as organizing oral health assessment and evaluation results using EPIC, data spreadsheets, and online survey tools.
  • Train in culturally sensitive and appropriate literacy level for target audience in order to translate educational materials that have been updated or that have been newly created into Spanish and/or Chinese (if bilingual capacity).
  • Learn how to best complete other office tasks and work on special projects as they arise, such as developing new trainings, developing surveys, etc.

The 9910 Public Service Trainee also performs other related duties as assigned.

NOTE: The qualified applicant pool will be used to fill various positions located at different
locations in the next six months.

Minimum Qualifications:
Completion of 15 semester units (or equivalent quarter units) of coursework from an accredited college or university


NOTE: Some physical strength is required in lifting and carrying supplies and equipment.

Desirable Qualification: The stated desirable qualifications may be considered at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring. 

  • Experience working with underserved populations, especially children.
  • Ability to prioritize, multitask and work independently and part of a team.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experienced in the use of MS Office
  • Bilingual in Spanish and/or Chinese
