The Mission of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is to protect and promote the health of all San Franciscans. SFDPH strives to achieve its mission through the work of two main Divisions - the San Francisco Health Network and Population Health.

The San Francisco Health Network is the City's only complete system of care and has locations throughout the City, including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, and over 15 primary care health centers.

Shift: Varied. Days, evening, nights, weekends and/or holiday shifts may be required, depending on position.

The list resulting from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future 2322 Nurse Manager (Critical Care Nursing) positions for the duration of the eligible list. 

Role description

Under general supervision, the 2322 Nurse Manager (Critical Care Nursing) supervises the delivery and evaluation of nursing care and the care environment. The 2322 Nurse Manager (Critical Care Nursing) performs the following essential job functions:

  • Manages nursing care in an assigned area, which may either be a clinical, administrative or community setting; Assesses patient care needs;
  • Supervises, recruits, selects, assigns, orients, and evaluates professional and ancillary staff;
  • Verifies validity of staff licensure;
  • Ensures compliance with body substance precautions and other infection control guidelines;
  • Participates in committees related to aspects of patient care and organizational development/integration;
  • Counsels staff on performance expectations and discrepancies;
  • Determines staff competency and certifies staff for performing clinical procedures;
  • Assesses developmental needs of staff and provides educational opportunities;
  • Identifies, investigates, documents, and addresses problems, unusual occurrences, and complaints;
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates specialized programs and supervises designated staff when assigned to a specific program;
  • Reviews clinical records to ensure accuracy and comprehensiveness of documentation;
  • Gathers, reviews, analyzes, and organizes technical, medical, operating, and statistical data/reports/records and makes recommendations;
  • Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and clinical services, organizational standards, and utilization measurements in collaboration with various professional staff and in accordance with regulatory requirements; and
  • Organizes, coordinates, directs and evaluates the processes and systems necessary for the delivery of coordinated, multidisciplinary care to the patient population.

The 2322 Nurse Manager (Critical Care Nursing) performs other related duties as required/assigned.

How to qualify

  1. License: Possession of a valid, including temporary or interim, California Registered Nurse License issued by the Board of Registered Nursing (BRN); AND
  2. Education: Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and/or university in Nursing, Nursing Administration, or a closely related field; AND
  3. Experience: Two (2) years (equivalent to 4,000 hours) of experience as a Critical Care Registered Nurse in a general acute care hospital within the last five (5) years.

Substitution: Up to two (2) years of additional experience as an Assistant Nurse Manager/Charge Nurse in a general acute care hospital (a hospital which provides 24-hour inpatient care, including the following basic services: Medical, Nursing, Surgical, Anesthesia, Laboratory, Radiology, Pharmacy and Dietary Services) may be substituted for the required degree on a year-for-year basis. Thirty (30) semester or forty-five (45) quarter units equal one year.

One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Desirable Qualifications: The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.

  • Two (2) years of work experience working in a public health acute care hospital.
  • One (1) year within the last five (5) years in a leadership position - charge nurse/nurse manager in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

SELECTION PROCEDURES:
After application submission, candidates deemed qualified must complete all subsequent steps to advance in this selection process, which includes the following:

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ): Candidates will be required to submit an MQSQ at any point in the recruitment process. This MQSQ is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications (MQ) for this position. The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.

Training and Experience Evaluation: (Weight: 100%):
Candidates that meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in a Training and Experience Evaluation that is designed to measure the knowledge, skills, and abilities in job related areas that have been identified as critical for satisfactory performance in this position.

The link to the training and experience evaluation will be emailed to the address listed on the candidate’s online application. Candidates will be required to respond to the training and experience evaluation in the time frame indicated and must submit the completed questionnaire as directed to have it evaluated. Responses cannot be changed once submitted. Candidates will be evaluated based on their responses. Candidates must achieve a passing score on the training and experience evaluation to continue in the selection process and will be placed on the confidential eligible list in rank order according to their final score.

After the confidential eligible list is adopted the department may administer additional selection procedures to make a final hiring decision.

Eligible List Duration: The list resulting from this examination process will be 6 months.
Certification Rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be Rule of Ten Scores.
