Established in 1980 by the Airport Commission, SFO Museum’s mission is to delight, engage, and inspire a global audience with programming on a broad range of subjects; to collect, preserve, interpret, and share the history of commercial aviation; and to enrich the public experience at San Francisco International Airport. The Museum has been accredited by the American Alliance of Museums since 1999 and retains the distinction of being the only accredited museum in an airport. The Museum operates more than twenty-five sites throughout the Airport terminals, including fourteen galleries that exhibit a rotating schedule of art, history, photography, science, and cultural exhibitions. Among the sites is the San Francisco Airport Commission Aviation Library and Louis A. Turpen Aviation Museum, which houses a permanent collection of more than 150,000 objects related to the history of commercial aviation. Role description

Working within SFO Museum’s Registration department and in partnership with colleagues across the Museum, Airport, and the San Francisco Arts Commission, the Museum Registrar has two primary areas of responsibility: to manage and maintain the Public Art Collection at San Francisco International Airport, and the performance of a wide variety of professional registration duties in support of the Museum’s exhibition programs.  The position has no direct reports but may supervise department interns on an as-needed basis.

The essential functions of this classification include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Works closely and collaboratively with staff at the Museum, Airport, Arts Commission and external vendors to manage approximately 10–15 annual maintenance projects for the Public Art Collection at San Francisco International Airport, including the installation of new objects and the cleaning of existing objects;
  • In consultation with the Museum’s conservator and Arts Commission staff, performs cleaning and maintenance on objects within the Airport’s Public Art Collection; coordinates with Airport departments and external vendors to assist in cleaning when needed;
  • Manages maintenance and cleaning project budgets, procures supplies and services from Airport departments and external vendors, and maintains inventory of cleaning and maintenance supplies;
  • Completes all exhibition management needs for meetings scheduled production due dates for approximately 5–10 assigned museum exhibitions annually;
  • Oversees all exhibition loan processing for lenders to assigned exhibitions including: cataloging and database entry; generation of object lists; loan agreement forms; receipt/release forms; insurance documents; correspondence; mailing; and all record keeping and related filing;
  • Implements care and handling requirements for assigned exhibitions, including: incoming packing and shipping; receiving; incoming condition reporting; temporary housing and storage; environmental monitoring; liaising with conservation regarding exhibition design handling; onsite packing and transportation; regular monitoring and inspection of galleries; deinstallation; outgoing condition reporting; outgoing packing and shipping;
  • Maintains art storage and housing requirements for objects in assigned exhibitions including: supply and use of approved housing materials, fixtures, and furnishings; tagging/marking; environmental control; seismic event damage protection; cleanliness; and security and loss prevention;
  • Supervises and trains Registration Department interns, as assigned;
  • Maintains a variety of computerized and manual records and files regarding collections, loans and exhibitions;
  • Researches and provides accurate information regarding disposition, care, movement and control of art objects;
  • Accompanies valuable objects of art in transit, oversees containerization, security, safety, movement and receipt of shipments;
  • Perform other duties, as required.
  • This position requires occasional night shifts for artwork maintenance.

How to qualify

Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in art, art history, museum studies, arts administration or a closely related field and four years of verifiable museum registration experience; OR

Possession of a master's degree from an accredited college or university in art, art history, museum studies, arts administration or a closely related postgraduate program and two years of verifiable museum registration experience. AND

Computer literacy in word processing, data base management and a computerized registration system.

Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.

One year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Desirable Qualifications

Any of the stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.

  • Working knowledge of the principles of museum object care, documentation, and classification;
  • Working knowledge of computer database systems, particularly Filemaker Pro and PDF management software, particularly Adobe Acrobat;
  • Working knowledge of fine art shipping and handling requirements;
  • Ability to plan, organize, implement and complete complex maintenance projects;
  • Ability to operate scissor lift (training will be provided)

Selection Procedures:
After application submission, candidates deemed qualified must complete all subsequent steps to advance in this selection process, which includes the following: 

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ): (Weight:  Qualifying) 

Candidates will be required to complete a MQSQ as part of the employment application. This MQSQ is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications (MQ) for this position. The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.

Supplemental Questionnaire Evaluation (Weight: 100%)

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be sent a Supplemental Questionnaire via electronic mail after the closing of this filing period.  The Supplemental Questionnaire is designed to measure the knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job-related areas required for the position.  Applicants will be given a deadline to return the Supplemental Questionnaire.  Those who do not respond by the established deadline will not be eligible to continue in the examination process and will not be added to eligibility list resulting from this process. All applicants’ responses to the Supplemental Questionnaire are subject to verification.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Clearance:
Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission are required to undergo a criminal history record check, including FBI fingerprints, and Security Threat Assessment in order to determine eligibility for security clearance and may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening. Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1, every applicant for an examination must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for the examination. Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission.

Customs Clearance:
Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission require the incumbent be qualified for unescorted access to the San Francisco International Airport U.S. Customs Security Area.  An application for a U.S. Custom Access Seal may be submitted to Customs ONLY after employment has commenced.  Employment in this position requires that the incumbent submit an application for, successfully acquire and maintain a Customs Access Seal.  Per Civil Service Commission Rule 110.9.1, every applicant must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for this examination.  Failure to acquire or maintain customs access, a requirement for this position, may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission. Customs Access Seal requirements and procedures are located in the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 19, Part 122, Sections 181 or 189.

Medical Examination:
Prior to appointment, candidates must successfully pass a medical examination to determine his/her ability to perform the essential functions of the job and/or the ability to meet the physical minimum requirements.

Eligible List/Score Report:

A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created, and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission. 

The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be six months and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.
