About City Distribution Division:
The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s City Distribution Division (Water Department) is responsible for directing approximately 322 employees in the operation and maintenance of the water distribution system within the City and County of San Francisco. These activities include, but are not limited to: operating and maintaining 27 pump stations, 13 storage tanks, 11 reservoirs and 20 regulators as well as other ancillary appurtenances and equipment; installing, repairing and maintaining 1,266 miles of water distribution mains including service connections and meters; four water systems (potable, ERWS, recycled, G.W.); engineering and designing new main and feeder extensions; managing the flora and fauna on over 1,000 acres of city owned property and rights-of-ways; and responding to all two-alarm or greater fires to assist the Fire Department in maintaining adequate water volume and consistent pressure while fighting fires.
Role description
Under general supervision, operates a multiple frequency radio base station for communication with mobile units in the field, operates a radio paging system; transmits work assignments to mobile units; trains new personnel; handles incoming telephone calls, makes referrals and performs related duties as required.
The as-needed Communications Dispatcher II position is a temporary appointment not to exceed the equivalent of half-time [1040 WKP hours] during any fiscal year. Selected individual should be available to cover any full shift or partial shift on an as-needed basis. Selected individual may be called on short notice to work the day shift, (7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.), swing shift (3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.), or graveyard shift (11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.).
Essential Functions:
- Provides operations support to the department’s field crews and operations support teams,
- Generates incoming service requests from various sources related to water emergencies,
- Sends updates and notifications related to water shut downs and other planned and unplanned system maintenance,
- Communicates with field staff during outages, reports and responds to various departments including Public Works, the Fire Department, and other City departments,
- Operates main entry gates and monitors the distribution yard’s camera surveillance system and reports relevant issues to duty foreman,
- Calls in crews to investigate complaints and perform emergency work,
- Provides tap directions for field assets upon request by field staff, performs data entry to systems and;
- 1705 Communication Dispatcher II completes other tasks as assigned.
How to qualify
Experience:
- Two years of verifiable experience operating a two-way radio communications base station, receiving, recording and transmitting messages from one source to another;
OR
- Combined total of two years of verifiable experience operating a multi-line telephone, and a two-way radio communications base system. One year of this experience must have been operating a two-way radio base station.
