The Bureau of Street Environmental Services
Keeps the City’s streets, sidewalks and other public spaces clean with mechanical and manual sweeping, graffiti abatement and power washing. The 24/7 operation runs specialized operations, including the Hot Spots teams that focus on encampment cleanups, CleanCorridorsSF, which provides a weekly deep cleaning to neighborhood commercial corridors, and proactive illegal dumping runs in the most impacted areas. The team also supports volunteer programs to advance San Francisco’s cleaning and greening initiatives.
San Francisco Public Works Bag and Tag Project
The Mayor of San Francisco has declared the Tenderloin area of the city a local emergency due to the increasing use of drugs in the area. This action added additional requirements and placed special focus on our department to maintain cleanliness in the area 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The scope of work includes litter removal, steam cleaning of sidewalks, encampment cleanup and bag and tag of homeless belongings. Due to the large number of homeless encampments clean up requests, the project is expanding with the intent to increase and expedite clean-up.
Our 9922 Management Assistant Trainees will receive training in program and operations management to help them qualify for positions in the Management Assistant Classification Series at the City and County of San Francisco.
Appointment Type: Temporary-Exempt (TEX), Category 18. This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer. The duration of the appointment is expected to be 12 months.

Role description
Under supervision, as a Management Assistant Trainee, you will perform general administrative tasks and assist management with rotating assignments relating to the Special Project Operation of the Bag and Tag program. You will provide customer service both internally and externally. You will work in an energetic, fast-paced environment, working closely and collaboratively alongside laborers, tradespersons, operations managers, the City Attorney department, and other staff. Your work will include frequent use of computer programs and tablets to complete related tasks.
Important and Essential Duties:
As a Clerical Trainee, your duties may include but are not limited to the following:
- Assist in the analysis of the Bag and Tag Program by researching and reviewing related information either manually and/or electronically (i.e., Article 20 Bicycle Chop Shop Ordinance).
- Review processes for Bag and Tag Program and analyze data of the items collected to identify areas of improvement.
- Utilize the department’s database to record, monitor, and maintain the Bag and Tag process and various special events/cases.
- Assist, research, and prepare bag and tag documentation for the City Attorney’s department related to claims.
- Provide weekly and monthly reports.
- Serve as the department’s liaison between the City Attorney, HSCO, and various agencies relating to encampments and special events.
How to qualify
Minimum Qualifications:
An associate degree from an accredited college or university OR its equivalent in terms of total course credits/units [i.e., at least sixty (60) semester or ninety (90) quarter credits/units]
Desirable Qualifications: The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify candidates advancing to the interview process and/or to identify job finalist(s) at the end of the selection process when referred for hiring.
- Ability to communicate in a clear concise manner both orally and in writing.
- Ability and flexibility to work in a dynamic, time-sensitive environment and to respond quickly and effectively during unanticipated events and emergencies.
- Familiarity with the City and County of San Francisco's geography.
- Passionate about enhancing the cleanliness in San Francisco, especially along the public right of way, activating public spaces, and private and public properties.
- Knowledge of new and emerging communications technologies
- Experience working with the public.
