Role description

As the Clean Transportation Specialist, you will collaborate with SF Environment staff, interdepartmental stakeholders, and external partners to implement the 2019 Citywide Electric Vehicle Roadmap, the 2021 Climate Action Plan, and State goals and objectives related to low-carbon transportation modes and emerging mobility.

You will implement existing programs and initiatives that aim to expand the city’s electric vehicle charging network, plan for medium- and heavy-duty vehicle electrification, and increase public awareness of and access to clean transportation modes. You will also explore and develop innovative policies, programs, and special projects to help the City reach its clean transportation objectives.

Serving in a Specialist position, you will work under the supervision of the Clean Transportation Program Manager. You may supervise Environmental Assistants, Environmental Associates, and fellows or interns as the need may arise.

Job Duties

  • Perform day-to-day project management in key clean transportation initiatives such as: 1) electric vehicle charging network development, 2) medium- and heavy-duty vehicle electrification planning, 3) charging ordinance implementation and enforcement, and 4) clean transportation awareness-building and outreach. 
  • Engage and maintain relationships with interdepartmental stakeholders, technical experts, industry organizations, local and state authorities, advocates, community-based organizations, and other key stakeholders.
  • Support clean transportation planning, goal setting, and impact tracking.
  • Support SF Environment staff with fundraising activities and grant proposals, including identifying funding opportunities, grant writing, requesting letters of support/commitment, etc.
  • Research, analyze, and report on a wide range of clean transportation topics and policy issues; provide policy and strategic recommendations with a focus on equity, workforce transition, and development; and participate in development of draft language for policy statements and local legislation.
  • Perform various duties applying technical knowledge of clean transportation that may include: data collection, root-cause analysis, develop strategies for solving technical and institutional problems, develop specifications for electric vehicle charging equipment, and evaluate the effectiveness of installed equipment.
  • Position may have the opportunity to supervise direct reports based on program needs.
  • May include additional duties as assigned.

How to qualify

Appointment Type

This position is a Temporary-Exempt Appointment, with an anticipated duration of 36 months. The position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive civil service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer.

Minimum Qualifications

Education
Possession of a baccalaureate degree in environmental sciences, public administration, business administration, accounting, biology, or a field related to clean transportation (including but not limited to planning, environmental studies, economics, public policy, computer science, or engineering) from an accredited college or university; AND

Experience
Two (2) years of experience planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating clean transportation, clean energy, and/or climate related programs and/or projects.
