The Mission of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is to protect and promote the health of all San Franciscans. SFDPH strives to achieve its mission through the work of two main Divisions - the San Francisco Health Network and Population Health. The San Francisco Health Network is the City’s only complete system of care and has locations throughout the City, including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, and over 15 primary care health centers.

Role description

The 2322 Nurse Manager– Infection Prevention Manager serves as facilitator, educator, and as a resource for leadership and staff relating to Evidence-based Practice Infection Prevention. The Infection Prevention Manager plans, develops, facilitates, and coordinates the infection Prevention and Control Program for the organization as well as ensures compliance with the requirements of Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Joint commission, San Francisco Department of Public Health, and other applicable regulatory and/or accrediting agencies.

The 2322 Nurse Manager– Infection Prevention Manager performs the following essential job functions:

  • Plans, directs, and evaluates all aspects of the organization’s Infection Prevention and Control Program and manages the daily activities/operations.
  • Establishes and maintains an up-to-date Infection Prevention and Control Plan, Infection Prevention policies, and guidelines for all hospital departments.
  • Collects statistics, prepares, and presents reports to Infection Prevention and control Committee and all others as appropriate.
  • Initiates Infection Prevention and Control studies where indicated, including but not limited to outbreak investigations.
  • Maintains established Infection Prevention and Control guidelines, quality assurance, safety, and other guidelines.
  • Responsible for preparation and control of the Infection Prevention and Control budget in cooperation with Chief Quality Officer and Director of patient safety.
  • Maintains a strong and collaborative working relationship with the Chair of Infection Prevention and Control Committee.
  • Assists the organization in remaining compliant to all regulatory requirements through risk assessments, program plans, and development of goals.
  • Ensures the Infection Prevention and Control Program uses appropriate statistical techniques to describe the data, calculate rates, and critically evaluate the significance of findings.
  • Analyzes and reports trended data and displays data in appropriate graphical manner (e.g., control charts, Pareto charts etc.).
  • Conducts regular rounds in hospital departments for discussing, monitoring, and following the practices of Infection Prevention and Control with staff.
  • Provides coaching, counseling, and other forms of support to staff.

The 2322 Nurse Manager– Infection Prevention Manager also performs other related duties as required.

SHIFTS: Varied. Days, evening, nights, weekends and/or holiday shifts may be required, depending on position.

How to qualify

  1. LICENSE: Possession of a valid, including temporary or interim, California Registered Nurse License issued by the Board of Registered Nursing (BRN); AND
  2. EDUCATION: Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and/or university in Nursing, Nursing Administration, or a closely related field; AND
  3. EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years (equivalent to 4,000 hours) of experience as a Registered Nurse in a long-term care, rehabilitation, or acute care hospital, within the last five (5) years.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: The stated desirable qualifications may be considered at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.

  • Three (3) years of work experience in infection prevention and control programs/activities in a healthcare setting.
  • Possession of a Master’s degree in Nursing, Nursing Administration, or a closely related field.
  • Experience in computer applications in Infection Prevention and Control and Microsoft Office Programs.

Substitution: Two (2) years of additional experience as an Assistant Nurse Manager/Charge Nurse in a long-term care facility, licensed home health agency or other hospital setting may be substituted for the educational requirement. One (1) year (2,000 hours) of work experience is equivalent to 30 Semester Credits or 45 Quarter Credits.

Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted. 

One-year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS: The above minimum qualifications reflect special conditions associated with the position(s) to be filled. They may differ from the standard minimum qualifications associated with this classification. 

Positions designated for Infection Prevention and Control also require

  • Twelve (12) months of work experience in infection prevention and control programs/activities in a healthcare setting.

Training and Experience Evaluation (Weight: 100%): Candidates that meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in a Training and Experience Evaluation that is designed to measure the knowledge, skills, and abilities in job-related areas that have been identified as critical for satisfactory performance in this position.
