San Francisco Public Works (SF Public Works) currently has an open position for the role of Clerk (1404) within our Building Repair Unit.

Building Repair
Provides quality professional construction, repair, and remodeling for City-owned facilities. It also provides emergency-repair services around the clock, ensuring that police, fire, and other public safety operations are always fully functional.

Appointment Type:  Temporary-Exempt (TEX), Category 18.  This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer. The duration of the appointment shall not exceed 36 months.

Role description

With the guidance of general supervision, you will file, retrieve, code, and index documents, record information and follow written directions.  You will use computer applications to update data and create Word documents, spreadsheets, and files.

Important and Essential Duties:
Your duties and responsibilities as a Clerk may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Filing, maintaining, and retrieving documents, recording and corresponding in accordance with established procedures.
  • Code and index documents, records, and correspondence.
  • Review documents for accurate completion.
  • Compile the necessary information and data for the preparation of departmental reports.
  • Prepare and maintain reports using judgment in the selection of data and materials.
  • Disseminate information and answer inquiries by communicating with the public and departmental personnel.
  • Operate office equipment that includes copiers, scanners, printers, and computer terminals.
  • Process mail: time stamp, sort, and distribute the incoming mail; fill and seal envelopes; make daily pickups and deliveries to ensure timely mailing and receipt of mail.

How to qualify

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience:
One (1) year of clerical experience including preparing and maintaining a variety of records and/or documents, filing, use of office equipment, public contact, and processing of incoming and outgoing mail.

Substitution: Any one of the following may substitute for six (6) months of the required experience:

Completion of a clerical training program (240 hours).

 OR

15-semester units (or equivalent quarter units) of coursework from an accredited college or university; 

OR

Completion of an approved City and County of San Francisco Clerical Administrative training program (as designated on the job announcement).

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience in Microsoft Suite, Word, Excel, and Team.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Class C Driver License.

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ):
Candidates may be required to complete an MQSQ as part of the employment application. This MQSQ is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications (MQ) for this position. The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.
