San Francisco Public Works currently has a vacancy for the position of Cement Finisher Supervisor II (7211).

The Bureau of Urban Forestry
We oversee the median maintenance, tree planting, and maintenance of 124,000-plus City-owned trees through the voter-backed  StreetTreeSF program. San Francisco Public Works is developing StreetTreeSF into an efficient and cost-effective system to routinely and proactively maintain street trees, ensuring that all public trees are inspected and pruned on a regular basis. In addition, crews repair sidewalks and build curb ramps to advance safety and accessibility.

Appointment Type: Temporary Exempt, position in Category 17, limited to no more than two (2) years in duration. Category 17 employees are used to backfill a Permanent Civil Service (PCS) employee on a leave of absence. This position is exempt from Civil Service and shall serve at the discretion of the Department Head.

Role description

Under general direction, as a Cement Finisher Supervisor II, you will supervise the activities of work crews engaged in masonry finishing and maintenance projects. 

Important and Essential Duties:
As a Cement Finisher Supervisor II, your duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • You will plan and coordinate with work crew/craft supervisors, cement masons, tile setters, plasters, bricklayers and related personnel involved in masonry finishing and maintenance projects.
  • Supervises staff by directing and evaluating assigned activities.
  • Inspect completed work and work-in-progress to ensure compliance with Americans with Disability Act (ADA) and Federal and State building and construction codes.
  • Prepare cost estimates for contractual bids.
  • Manage data and create reports on projects.
  • Maintain work schedules and time rosters.
  • Submit requests for the purchase of new equipment and materials.
  • Evaluate the condition of tools and equipment and perform necessary maintenance.
  • Provide training to staff on the proper use of equipment and materials involved in masonry finishing and maintenance work.
  • Attend and conduct safety meetings.
  • Respond to inquiries and complaints from the public.

How to qualify

Minimum Qualifications 

Education
Completion of a recognized three-year cement mason apprenticeship program

Experience
Three (3) years of experience as a journey-level cement mason and two (2) years of experience supervising journey-level cement masons. Supervisory experience must be equivalent to City Job Code 7227.

License and Certification
Possession and maintenance of a valid Class C driver license.

Substitution
An additional three (3) years of work experience as a journey-level cement mason may substitute for the three-year cement mason apprenticeship program.

Desirable Qualifications 
Knowledge of the “ Standard Codes” applicable to trench excavation, path of travel in the public right-away, and ADA permissible slope as applied to curb ramps.

Notes:

  • One-year full-time employment is considered equivalent to 2000 hours (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.
