Role description

Special Project: SFPUC Water Radio Replacement Project      

Under direction, performs a wide variety of skilled technical maintenance, testing, installation, and repair work on complex wireless and networked communications equipment to support the SFPUC’s voice radio and microwave communications systems.

Essential Duties:

• Supervises and evaluates the performance of Journey level Communications Systems Technicians (7362) and other assigned technical staff.
• Assigns, supervises, and inspects the work of resolving malfunctions and equipment failures related to operating systems, network management software and equipment parameter configuration software of a wide variety of telecommunications equipment.
• Specifies and procures communication equipment including, but not limited to portable radios, control stations, antennas, headsets, and related equipment.
• Analyzes and corrects complex equipment malfunctions.  When necessary, notifies appropriate authorities to make required repairs.
• Maintains records and documentation of wireless systems and networks.
• Contacts and coordinates with representatives of other City departments and outside agencies in connection with radio and communications equipment maintenance.
• Ensures adherence with Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations in the installation, maintenance and repair of radio and communication equipment.
• Enforces codes for safe practices and provides training and development for subordinates.

The Senior Communications Systems Technician will perform other related duties as assigned.

How to qualify

These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills, and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification. Please note, additional qualifications (i.e., special conditions) may apply to a particular position and will be stated on the exam/job announcement.

Experience: Six years of journey level electronics technician experience, which must have included the installation, repair, and maintenance of a broad range of electronic communications systems and equipment.

Substitution: Coursework in electronic communications technology from an accredited college or university may substitute for up to a total of two years of the experience requirement, prorated as follows: one year = 30 semester/45 quarter units.

Certificate: Possession of a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) General-Class Radio-Telephone Operator's License OR an APCO Certificate of Competency (Associated Public Safety Communications Officers) OR a NABER Certificate (National Association of Business and Educational Radio); position at Airport requires FCC license.

License: Possession of a valid driver's license

Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment: exposure to disagreeable weather conditions, working in confined spaces, lifting of heavy objects, and carrying them or moving them for moderate distances; ability to safely lift 40 pounds.
