The San Francisco Film Commission and the Film SF Office (Film SF) champions filming in San Francisco. We are a City agency that strives to attract a diversity of storytellers to the cinematic city of San Francisco and foster filming in order to stimulate economic development, create jobs and share the beauty of our city with the rest of the world.

We proactively promote San Francisco as a filming destination for the motion picture, television, and other related industries, and work with the film community to support local projects with significant ties to San Francisco.

Film SF acts as a liaison between San Francisco’s many neighborhood and merchant groups and the film industry. It also provides policy priorities for the Mayor and the Board of Supervisors regarding long-range promotion, development and planning for a significant film arts base in San Francisco. Film SF issues permits to productions filming in San Francisco, working closely with other City Agencies such as SFPD, SFMTA, MUNI, the Port of San Francisco, and the Department of Public Works to coordinate and facilitate both the needs of the productions, the City and its residents.

The San Francisco Film Commission is made up of eleven Commissioners who are appointed and serve at the will of the Mayor. The Commissioners work in partnership with the Film SF office to develop the vision, strategic direction, goals and policies, to connect and partner with stakeholders that promote and strengthen the film community and infrastructure in San Francisco.

Role description

Appointment Type: Temporary Exempt (TEX) Appointment. This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive civil service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer.

The Film SF | Marketing Manager (Senior Administrative Analyst -1823) – is responsible for supporting the Deputy Director and Executive Director in marketing, communications, film and media landscape analysis, outreach, and engagement of Film SF’s programs and services. This role will attract productions to shoot in San Francisco and support local filmmakers to get their stories told while amplifying San Francisco as a vital production hub and thriving film and media industry for creatives.

  • Lead Film SF marketing, communication, and engagement strategy, analysis, and implementation in partnership with Executive Director and Deputy Director.
  • Manage department’s marketing and community engagement efforts across programs and network with industry to grow brand awareness and promote Film SF programs and initiatives.
  • Develop Film SF’s social media strategy from project planning to implementation including content creation, posting, creating graphics and establishing active and regular cadence and online presence for department. This includes Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and blogs.
  • Lead marketing and rebranding efforts and analysis for the Scene in San Francisco rebate program.
  • Identify best practices in marketing and promotion campaigns and broader strategies through research and analysis to support efforts to promote San Francisco.
  • Build out Film SF’s digital marketing presence through analysis, maintenance and updates to the website and create graphics, creative collateral, and digital assets as needed. Design and create online marketing content, including newsletters, blogs, brochures, promotional emails, infographics, marketing videos, events promotion, email campaigns, and more.
  • Track and measure marketing performance to identify areas for growth.
  • Draft press releases in collaboration with OEWD Director of Communications and serve as press and publicity liaison for Film SF.
  • Project manage the development of the annual report including the collection of assets and validator quotes, drafting of content and designing layout and graphics. Prepare and present data, annual report and programmatic information to the public, Mayor’s Office, Board of Supervisors, and other City Departments, as needed.
  • Organize, coordinate, and promote department’s hosted events including quarterly mixers and presentations including logistics and planning.
  • Drive outreach and community engagement and strengthen partnerships with San Francisco and Bay Area film and media community (filmmakers, organizations, festivals, and film schools). Identify opportunities for Film SF team to collaborate with the industry in areas such as panels, talks, and, workshops.
  • Support Film SF with other administrative duties as needed, including but not limited to facilitating production activity in San Francisco and issuing Film Use Agreements (i.e. production permits), including coordinating locations, parking, insurance, SFPD needs, and more.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with City departments, businesses, residents and associations.
  • Occasional on-call availability on weekends to address project-specific emergencies or resolve issues, as needed.
  • Work with Deputy Director, Executive Director, staff and OEWD on implementing racial equity standards, policies, procedures, as assigned.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities, as assigned.

How to qualify

Minimum Qualifications

These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification. Please note, additional qualifications (i.e. special conditions)may apply to a particular position and will be stated on the job ad.

Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and three(3) years full-time equivalent experience performing professional-level analytical work. Qualifying professional-level analytical work includes analysis, development, administration, and reporting in major programs and functions of an organization in the areas of budgets, contracts, grants, policy, or other functional areas related to the duties of positions in the 182X Class series.

Substitution:

Possession of a graduate degree (Master's degree or higher) from an accredited college or university with major coursework in specialized subject matter areas such as public or business administration, management, business law, contract law, public policy, urban studies, economics, statistical analysis, finance, accounting or other fields of study closely related to the essential functions of positions in the Class series may be substituted for one (1) year of required experience.

Additional experience as described above may be substituted for the required degree on a year-for-year basis (up to a maximum of 2 years). Thirty (30) semester units or forty-five (45) quarter units equal one year.

  • Experience in mobilizing and coordinating various stakeholders to achieve a set of outcomes and goals.

  • Ability to lead and manage various working groups and consultants while balancing multiple projects, priorities and timelines.

  • Experience in organizational development, marketing and event planning.
  • Experience working for or with non-profits organizations and/or government departments.
  • Computer skills and proficiency in working with basic software programs e.g., word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation applications.
