The Mission of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is to protect and promote the health of all San Franciscans. The San Francisco Health Network is the City’s only complete system of care and has locations throughout the City, including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, and over 15 primary care health centers.
Role description
Under general supervision, serves as a staff consultant on matters of nutrition; plans, organizes and coordinates the nutrition services of various inpatient, outpatient and community health programs; provides consultation directly to individuals or families with nutrition problems. The 2846 Nutritionist essential duties include:
- Plans, organizes and coordinates nutrition services and/or community nutrition programs in a clinical, outpatient, or community setting
- Provides appropriate nutritional consultations and medical nutrition therapy to individuals and families, groups to successfully address nutrition issues;
- Develops, reviews and recommends nutrition education materials
- Plans, promotes, develops, arranges and provides nutrition education
- Designs, implements and evaluates policy, system, and environmental (PSE) change projects that promote healthy eating, active living, and nutrition security
- Conducts research and evaluates studies
- Secures financial resources to fund nutrition programs to fund nutrition programs, projects and activities
- Maintains current competence as Nutritionist by attending continuing education and professional meetings, as appropriate, to meet standards of clinical, outpatient, and/or community nutrition
The 2846 Nutritionist performs other related duties as assigned/required.
How to qualify
Minimum Qualifications (Required)
- EDUCATION: Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, with major course work in nutrition; AND
- EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of experience providing medical nutrition therapy in a public health or community health setting; AND
- CERTIFICATION: Current registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR); AND
- LICENSE: Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
SUBSTITUTION: Possession of a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Nutrition or a related field may be substituted for the required experience.
One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40- hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Selection Procedures:
After application submission, candidates deemed qualified must complete all subsequent steps to advance in this selection process, which includes the following.
Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ):Candidates will be required to complete an MQSQ as part of the employment application. This MQSQ is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications (MQ) for this position. The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.
Supplemental Questionnaire Examination: (Weight = 100%): Qualified candidates will be sent a Supplemental Questionnaire (SQ) exam that must be completed by the set date. Candidates will be evaluated on their relative knowledge, skill and ability levels in job-related areas. The examination component may include, but is not limited to: Knowledge of nutrition and dietetic practice; Knowledge of nutrition needs of diverse groups; Ability to plan community nutrition programs; Ability to exchange information; Ability to compose written materials; Ability to verbally express oneself
A passing score must be achieved on the SQ in order to be placed/ranked on the Eligible List. Candidate responses on the Supplemental Questionnaire cannot be changed once submitted. Candidates will be placed in rank order according to their final score on the SQ.
Eligible List: A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created, and used for certification purposes only. The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be of twelve (12) months, and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Program Director. The list will be used to fill current and future vacancies within the next twelve (12) months.
Certification: The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be Rule of Three. Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions. The department may administer additional position-specific selection procedures to make final hiring decisions.
