DPH is accepting applications for Nurse Practitioner (Trauma Specialty) positions. ZSFG is an essential part of San Francisco’s health care system serving some 100,000 patients each year and providing 20 percent of the city’s inpatient care. Recognized as one of the nation’s top hospitals, we serve the community with a full complement of inpatient, outpatient, emergency, diagnostic and psychiatric services for adults and children 24-hours a day.

NATURE OF POSITIONS
This recruitment may be used to fill the following Nurse Practitioner positions:

  • Trauma and Acute Care Surgery positions provide acute care to critically injured and acute care surgery patients in Emergency Department, ICU and Medical/Surgical Ward settings.
  • Neurology positions provide of the brain and neurologically impaired, injured patients, along with acute care neurology patients.
  • Neurological Surgery positions provide of the brain and spinal cord injured patients, along with acute care neurological surgery patients.

The list resulting from this recruitment may be used to fill Nurse Practitioner (Trauma Specialty) positions for the next six months.

Role description

Under general nursing and medical direction, utilizing standardized procedures, the 2328 Nurse Practitioner (Trauma Specialty) functions within an organized system for the delivery of health care in association with other members of the multidisciplinary health care team and performs specialized nurse practitioner duties in clinical settings.

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) coordinates and implements aspects of trauma care (medical and surgical) of the injured and acute care surgery patients. The NP provides effective health care in maintaining collaborative and consultative relationship with all members of the interdisciplinary care team while providing excellent and timely care to the patients admitted to ZSFG. In addition, the NP provides continuity in attending outpatient clinics for follow up.

The 2328 Nurse Practitioner (Trauma Specialty) performs the following essential functions:

  • Provides routine preventative and continuity care to adult and/or pediatric patients; this may include complete history and physical examinations.
  • Orders diagnostic tests, which may include laboratory tests, X-rays and other imaging, E.K.G.s, and other disease or condition specific diagnostic tests.
  • Identifies and manages patients with unstable chronic diseases appropriate to clinical specialty.
  • Provides urgent care to acutely ill patients, including providing care to both trauma and general surgery patients in the Inpatient and Outpatient setting;
  • Acute care planning for patients in an inpatient setting.
  • Assesses and diagnosis, develops treatment plans, and furnishes medications.
  • Counsels and educates patients and collaborates with healthcare team; orients and educates medical students and surgical house-staff to the Trauma Service guidelines and protocols.
  • Consults with physicians on the diagnosis and treatment of unstable and complex patient conditions.
  • Documents medical records and adheres to patient privacy.
  • Participates in staff meetings and conferences regarding patient care, as well as quality improvement/control activities.

The 2328 Nurse Practitioner (Trauma Specialty) performs other related duties as assigned/required.

How to qualify

  1. LICENSE: Possession of a valid California Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing; AND
  2. LICENSE: Possession of a valid California Nurse Practitioner (NP) license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing; AND 
  3. LICENSE: Possession of a current medication furnishing license issued by the California Board of Registered Nurses; AND 
  4. EDUCATION: Possession of a Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN) from an accredited college or university; AND 
  5. CERTIFICATION: Possession of national board certification, or eligibility, as a Nurse Practitioner issued by one of the following recognized national certifying body or organization: 
  6. SPECIALTY AREA REQUIREMENTS: (TRAUMA)

    • CERTIFICATION: Specialization as an Acute Care NP or Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP; AND​​​​
    • CERTIFICATION: Possession of a valid Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Certificate issued by the American Heart Association. 

Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted. 

One-year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: The stated desirable qualifications may be considered at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring. 

  • Minimum one year of experience in critical care.
  • Experience in an acute care hospital (a hospital which provides 24-hour inpatient care, including the following basic services: Medical, Nursing, Surgical, Anesthesia, Laboratory, Radiology, Pharmacy and Dietary Services).

Selection Procedures

Training and Experience Evaluation (Weight: 100%): Candidates that meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in a Training and Experience Evaluation that is designed to measure the knowledge, skills, and abilities in job-related areas that have been identified as critical for satisfactory performance in this position.
