San Francisco Public Works currently has a vacancy for the position of Public Service Aide – Associate to Professionals within our Bag and Tag Project (9922).

The Bureau of Street Environmental Services
Keeps the City’s streets, sidewalks, and other public spaces clean with mechanical and manual sweeping, graffiti abatement and power washing. The 24/7 operation runs specialized operations, including the Hot Spots teams that focus on encampment cleanups, CleanCorridorsSF, which provides a weekly deep cleaning to neighborhood commercial corridors, and proactive illegal dumping runs in the most impacted areas. The team also supports volunteer programs to advance San Francisco’s cleaning and greening initiatives.

San Francisco Public Works Bag and Tag Project
The Mayor of San Francisco has declared the Tenderloin area of the city a local emergency due to the increasing use of drugs in the area. This action added additional requirements and placed a special focus on our department to maintain cleanliness in the area 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The scope of work includes litter removal, steam cleaning of sidewalks, encampment cleanup and bag and tag of items.

In this role, you will gain knowledge and experience that will prepare you for a successful future career, potentially starting as a 7501 – General Laborer Apprentice or a 7398 – Apprentice Cement Mason I.

Appointment Type: Temporary-Exempt (TEX), Category 18. This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer. The duration of the appointment is expected to be 12 months.

Role description

Under supervision, as a Public Service Aide, you will perform general administrative tasks and/or assist management with rotating assignments relating to the Special Project Operation of the Bag and Tag program. You will provide customer service, both internally and externally, and work with the Bureau of Street Environmental Services’ personnel attending volunteer cleanup events. You will work in an energetic, fast-paced environment, working closely and collaboratively alongside laborers, tradespersons, operations managers, the City Attorney department, and other staff. You will also regularly utilize computer programs and tablets to complete related tasks.

Important and Essential Duties:
As a Public Service Aide, your duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Update and monitor the SF Public Works' Bag and Log Spread Sheet
  • Arrange and perform pick-ups and deliveries from various sites.
  • Organize photo documentation of items received.
  • Assist with the return of items to individuals.
  • Coordinate and maintain items within the Bag and Tag storage facility.
  • Process the initial intake of items.
  • Operate city vehicles and transport items to the Bag and Tag storage facility.

How to qualify

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalency test (GED or California High School Proficiency Exam).

License:
Possession of a valid California driver’s license.

Desirable Qualifications: The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify candidates advancing to the interview process and/or to identify job finalist(s) at the end of the selection process when referred for hiring.

  • Ability and flexibility to work in a dynamic, time-sensitive environment and to respond quickly and effectively during unanticipated events and emergencies.
  • Familiarity with the City and County of San Francisco's geography.
  • Passionate about enhancing cleanliness in San Francisco, especially along the public right of way, activating public spaces, and private and public properties.
  • Experience working with the public.

The selection process will include an evaluation of applications in relation to minimum requirements. Depending on the number of applicants, the Department may establish and implement additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluate the qualifications of candidates. If this becomes necessary, only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the Department will move forward in the recruitment process.

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ):
Candidates may be required to complete an MQSQ as part of the employment application. This MQSQ is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications (MQ) for this position. The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.
