Compensation: $29.55/hour

The Department of Human Resources (DHR) ApprenticeshipSF Program, in partnership with IFPTE Local 21, Office of Economic and Workforce Development, CA Division of Apprenticeship Standards, and multiple City department partners, is piloting a state-recognized apprenticeship, which serves as a pathway for interested applicants who do not have an AA degree or equivalent to qualify for the IT Operations Support Administrator job classification series. The pilot program will launch in early January of 2024. Participating City departments such as Department of Public Health, Department of Technology, Human Services Agency, San Francisco International Airport, San Francisco Planning, and the Office of the Controller will hire applicants into one-year, full-time 1090 IT Operations Support Apprentice positions. Apprentices will participate in on-the-job training provided by the host departments and related instruction, including IT coursework at City College of San Francisco, technical training provided by the Department of Technology, and professional development provided by the DHR. Apprentices who complete the program will graduate with an industry-recognized certificate of completion from the CA Division of Apprenticeship Standards and meet the minimum education requirement for the 1091 IT Operations Support Admin I position. 

About Apprenticeships in the City & County of San Francisco

ApprenticeshipSF is the City's apprenticeship program. Apprenticeships are a City-Union partnership using an "earn and learn'' model, including a unique combination of structured classroom learning with on-the-job training from an assigned professional worker mentor. Upon completing an Apprenticeship program, participants receive an industry-issued, nationally recognized credential that certifies occupational proficiency, is portable, and provides a pathway to a fulfilling career.

Role description

Under close guidance and direct supervision, learns to provide technical support for moderately sized networks with single or multiple Local Area Networks or data center operational support for multiple, distinct computers, mobile devices and their networks; installs, maintains, and enhances software, hardware and peripherals; assists in performing basic help-desk functions; coordinates user training; performs data and access protection processes; and performs related work which may include computerized data input and record maintenance.

Example of Important and Essential Duties:

1. Assists in providing technical and operational support and maintenance for computers and networks; assist in network upgrades; log, track and monitor all problems and requests; assists in providing technical support to department programs and staff in the use of computer applications. Learns to assign logons and rights, print queues and directory structures; learns to reset passwords; create departmental groups; and run security programs.

2. Assists in monitoring and operating computer and telecommunications systems, including data lines, terminals and printers; troubleshooting hardware/software problems; and coordinating with vendors for equipment repair.

3. Assists in performing help desk functions for routine issues including problem tracking, analysis, and resolution; define and document help desk solutions; providing problem determination; analyzing and resolving system problems to ensure continuous system operations required for scheduled data processing functions; administering off-site storage of data.

4. Learn to install and configure server hardware, workstations and various peripherals; learn to install software applications.

5. Learn to produce, review and assist in the collection of client data, service and billing is-sues and documentation to comply with governmental mandates and regulations.

6. Assists in monitoring and reviewing system software applications and procedures pertaining to accurate reporting; reviewing system output and data processing operations for accuracy and completeness; and providing communications support between systems.

7. Assist in the development and production of system/end-user documentation for applications processing and procedures.

8. Assist in the development and implementation of training activities and materials; instruct users in logon and document identification procedures.

9. Learns to generate reports and statistics; perform system backups; and retrieve documents.

10. Performs other duties as required/needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Applicants must be 18 years of age and over; AND

2. Applicants must have either a High School Graduation Diploma, Graduation Equivalent Degree (G.E.D.), or California High School Proficiency Certificate.

Selection Procedures: Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement. The following criteria may be used in the selection of candidates to advance in the process:

1. Participant in the Office of Economic and Workforce Development’s (OEWD) TechSF training programs 

2. New or continuing student in the City College of San Francisco Computer Network Information Technology (CNIT) program 

3. Completion of the Human Services Agency Public Service Trainee (PST) JobsNow Program in a City department's information technology division

4. Completion of a pre-apprenticeship and/or related IT training program

5. Emerging IT education or IT training experience

NOTE: If you are selected to advance, you will receive an email with supplemental questions to complete as part of the next round of screening.

November 27, 2023: Registration opens at City College of SF - Enrollment application is required to register for classes starting in January 2024. Due to limited space, applicants are encouraged to register and enroll in classes ASAP.
