Role description
Under medical direction, Respiratory Care Practitioners provide diagnostic, evaluation, and treatment of pulmonary system deficiencies and abnormalities.
Essential Functions Include
- Provides care, treatment, and pulmonary rehabilitation to patients with pulmonary disorders by means of respiratory therapy
- Administers therapeutic gases, aerosols, and aerosolized medication as ordered and clinically indicated.
- Performs arterial punctures and arterial blood gas analysis
- Monitors effectiveness of respiratory therapy modalities
- Works collaboratively with other physicians and other disciplines to develop appropriate treatment plans.
- Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and procedures. Patient, family, and caregiver education provided as needed.
- Performs other therapeutic maneuvers such as, but not limited to:
- chest physical therapy
- tracheobronchial aspiration
- cardiopulmonary resuscitation
- Nasotracheal suctioning
- Documents patient care services as rendered in accordance with the organization’s policy and best practices.
- Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with department procedures, policies, and protocols.
- Performs related duties as required.
How to qualify

- Possession of a valid certificate as a Respiratory Care Practitioner issued by the Respiratory Care Examining Committee of the State of California
Basic Life Support for Professional Rescuer (BLS) Certificate Requirement/Provision
Possession of a valid Basic Life Support for Professional Rescuer (BLS) Certificate issued by the American Heart Association is required as a provision to employment for all positions. Eligibles who do not possess such a certification may participate in this examination process and be appointed to a position(s), but will be required to obtain the certificate within two (2) weeks of the hire date and maintain validity throughout the length of employment. A photocopy of the valid Basic Life Support for Professional Rescuer (BLS) Certificate must be provided to the appropriate supervisor of the appointment within the allotted time frame. Failure to demonstrate/show proof of possession of valid certification within two (2) weeks of the hire date and throughout the length of employment may result in dismissal and/or termination of employment.

Eligible List/Score Report
An examination score report will be published online for applicants to view rankings, final scores, and the number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. A confidential list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created and used for certification purposes only. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.
The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be twelve (12) months and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.

Certification
The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be the Rule of 10 Scores. Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.
