The San Francisco Department of Public Health (DPH)'s Food Nutrition Services is accepting applications for Class 2654 Cook. Some positions are limited to 1,040 work hours in a year. Exempt employees are considered "at will" and serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer.

The qualified applicant pool resulting from this recruitment may be utilized to fill future exempt vacancies within the San Francisco Department of Public Health (DPH).

Role description

Temporary Exempt - In accordance with San Francisco Charter Section 10.104.

Under general supervision, the 2654 Cook  performs skilled duties in the preparation and cooking of large quantities of a variety of foods; and performs related duties as required. Essential duties include but are not limited to:

  • Plans menus and accommodates special diets.
  • Prepares and cooks large variety of foods.
  • Orders food and requisitions supplies.
  • Directs and participates in cleaning the kitchen area, appliances and utensils.
  • Estimates amount of groceries needed.
  • Follows instructions and works according to established methods and procedures.
  • Maintains records, routine reports, and related duties.

The Cook also performs other related duties as assigned/required.

How to qualify

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (required):

Education:
Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent (GED or High School Proficiency Examination); AND

Experience:
Three (3) years of work experience cooking large quantities of food in a setting such as a hospital, correctional facility, the military, hotel, restaurant or equivalent food service establishment.

  • Note: Coffee shops, small grab-and-go kiosks, and sandwich shops are not considered qualifying cooking experience.  

Substitution:
One (1) year of the required experience can be substituted by any of the following:

  1. completion of a one (1) year culinary arts certificate program; or
  2. completion of an apprenticeship program certified by a nationally recognized culinary arts organization; or
  3. possession of an Associate’s degree in culinary arts.

Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted. 

One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2000 hours. (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week.) Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.
