Role description

The Probation Aide training program is designed to offer various types of trainee or entry level opportunities in a variety of settings within the Adult Probation Department.  The position will provide an introduction to Probation career options and role models while allowing incumbents to learn about the Adult Probation Department’s work environment.

The Adult Probation Department uses evidence based supervision practices to provide meaningful supervision and case management for probation clients under the Department's supervision. The Department specializes with gender specific, sex offender, domestic violence, gang, mental health, transitional aged youth, substance abuse, reentry services, victim restitution, post release community supervision and mandatory community supervision.

The Adult Probation Department is committed to providing qualified candidates with valuable training and work experience in Probation Supervision.  This assignment provides comprehensive exposure to probation services and supervision, and can be extremely beneficial in preparing for a career in probation, law enforcement, social services, public government, and corrections entities.

Type of training to be provided, and description of duties:

The “Probation Aide” will receive training to assist Adult Probation Department staff with the functioning of the Department’s operations and/or administration at all levels.  The Probation Aide training and job duties will include, however, are not limited to the following: support probation staff and management in performing routine job related tasks and special projects; maintain respectful relationships with probationers, victims, criminal justice partners, and other collaterals; perform data entry of information in records management systems; escort probationers to designated areas within the department; maintain attendance, progress, and other activities related to probationer performance; may be assigned to support educational, workforce development, and other programs related to probationer re-entry services; liaison between Deputy Probation Officer, Sheriff’s Department and District Attorney’s Office; outreach with outside agencies and programs in order to collect program materials and information about support services, and performs related duties as assigned.

Expected duration of employment in the training program is limited to 36 months. Candidates will be working part-time, while continuing education towards the baccalaureate degree, which is a minimum requirement for Deputy Probation officer. 36 month program will enable incumbents to be trained in a variety of systems, operations and administrative tasks related to supervision and services for adult probation clients, while gaining experience desirable for a career in probation work.

City classification(s) incumbent would be qualified (meets the minimum qualifications) to compete for upon successful completion of the training program: 8444/8530 Deputy Probation Officer and 8529 Probation Assistant.

Target application population for the program and additional requirements while employed in the program:  Candidates pursuing a degree in the field of criminal justice, social and behavioral sciences, education, or a closely related field.

How to qualify

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must have completed one year (equivalent to 30 semester units or 45 quarter units) of education towards an Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in the Social and Behavioral Sciences, Criminal Justice, Social Work, Education, or closely related field.

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

  • Computer-literate performer with software experience covering wide variety of applications
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Exceptional listener and communicator who effectively conveys information verbally and in writing. Bilingual or multi-lingual speaker, a plus.
  • Possesses human relations skills required to communicate effectively, and with sensitivity to client’s needs
  • Familiarity working with diverse population
  • Ability to self-motivate and work independently with minimum supervision
  • Flexible team player who thrives in environments requiring ability to effectively prioritize and juggle multiple concurrent projects.
  • Flexibility with the development of new programs

What else should I know?

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The Adult Probation Department work locations include, the APD Headquarters, CASC.  Work hours will be scheduled for part time work, Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: 

Background clearance required:  Prior to employment with the Adult Probation Department, criminal records will be carefully reviewed; candidate must clear Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprinting, in order to determine eligibility for criminal history clearance.
