Role description
Under direction, this position performs skilled work in connection with the maintenance and repair of the exterior and interior bodies of a wide variety of equipment, including automotive and transit vehicles and equipment; exercises work direction over a crew of automotive body and fender workers engaged in such work. Requires responsibility for explaining and carrying out work methods and procedures; Performs related duties as required.
Essential functions of this position include: supervising and participating in fabricating sheet metal parts for the repair or replacement of damaged motor vehicle and transit equipment bodies, fenders and radiators; fabricating and repairing a variety of metal auxiliary equipment on motor vehicles; supervising and participating in the straightening, replacement and repair of fenders, panels and other exterior parts of motor vehicle equipment; assigning tasks and operating gas and electric welding equipment in the repair of bodies, frames and radiators on a variety of automotive equipment; repairing metal bodies and frames on trolley coaches; repairing and replacing windows, fenders and weather stripping on transit equipment; requisitioning supplies, parts and shop equipment, maintaining inventory of records and vehicle and equipment service/repair logs to ensure efficient shop operations; operating fleet vehicles that travel to and from worksites to assess and evaluate breakdowns and mechanical malfunctions of heavy duty, off-road, hydraulic, and/or electrical equipment for repair located in the field; preparing cost estimates on work orders and repairing by estimating time, supplies, parts, and staff needed per job cost to incorporate in the departmental budget review; holding safety meetings and is knowledgeable and able to train employees in proper toxic handling and disposal, material safety data sheets and hazardous communication laws; monitoring and tracking time and attendance of staff, preparing work orders and cost and time estimates, acquisitioning of supplies and equipment, writing vehicle and equipment specifications for vendor review, generating various preventive and/or maintenance management reports using a computerized maintenance management system; reviewing and/or reporting of ongoing project workloads, schedules, and manpower resources, in order to plan, coordinate, and facilitate new assignments/projects to achieve monthly goals and/or objectives.
How to qualify
1. Completion of an accredited Automotive Body Apprenticeship program; AND
2. Five (5) years of full-time verifiable work experience as a journey-level automotive body and fender worker; AND
3. Possession of a high school diploma, GED or California High School Proficiency Certificate; AND
4. Possession of a Class C driver license.
Substitution: Additional verifiable journey-level automotive body and fender experience may substitute for the Automotive Body Apprenticeship program requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Note: Some positions require a class B driver license. Employees appointed to these positions will be required to obtain a class B driver license within six (6) months of appointment.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Comprehensive knowledge of automotive auto body repair and painting tools, materials, supplies and techniques, and the properties of various types of paint and finishing materials.
2. Comprehensive knowledge of methods for disposal and record keeping of hazardous materials as required by regulation.
3. Ability to make periodic inspection of work performed to assure conformance with instructions and prescribed standards.
4. Ability to plan, assign and supervise and inspect the work of subordinate personnel; handle personnel issues effectively and courteously.
5. Ability to use computer programs to estimate repairs, record daily work activities and other jobrelated tasks.
6. Considerable skill in analyzing and preparing cost estimates for auto body repair and repainting damaged vehicles.
7. Ability to properly use and wear personal protective equipment (PPE).
8. Ability to perform major frame repair.
9. Ability to work with various materials, such as: fiberglass, steel, metal, aluminum, plastic, rubber, glass, etc.
10. Ability to use current, state-of-the-art welding techniques.
The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.

Exam Process: After application submission, candidates deemed qualified must complete all subsequent steps to advance in this selection process, which includes the following:
Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ) (Weight - Qualifying): Candidates will be required to complete a MQSQ as part of the employment application. This MQSQ is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications (MQ) for this position. The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.
Written Multiple-Choice Examination (Weight - 100%): Candidates deemed eligible and admitted to the examination process will be administered a written multiple-choice test designed to measure knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job-related areas which may include but not limited to: knowledge of standard track and cable car track maintenance methods, skill with track maintenance tools and equipment, knowledge of concrete and asphalt laying materials, knowledge of safety procedures and human relations ability.
Eligible List/Score Report: A confidential eligible list of qualifying candidates will be created and used for certification purposes only. A score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection upon request once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this selection process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.
The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be 24 months and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.
SFMTA-Specific Conditions of Employment: Candidates who are being considered for appointment may be required to pass a medical examination. Candidates who cannot meet the medical requirement will be placed under waiver until this requirement is met. The medical examination will be administered only to those applicants who are being considered for appointment.
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has determined that Class 7322 Automotive Body & Fender Worker Assistant Supervisor is a “safety-sensitive” position, under regulations issued by the Federal Transit Administration (49 CFR Part 655). Federal law requires that all transit employees who perform safety-sensitive functions be subject to random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty and follow-up drug and alcohol testing. All applicants for Safety-Sensitive positions shall undergo urine drug testing prior to employment and within 90 days prior to performing Safety-Sensitive functions for the first time. Receipt by the SFMTA of a negative test result is required prior to the employee being placed on the payroll. A positive, adulterated, negative dilute or substituted test will result in a decision not to hire, and the applicant’s name will be removed from the list of eligibles for Safety-Sensitive positions. The SFMTA will not consider hiring any person who tested positive, adulterated, substituted or refused to submit to testing for a minimum of two years following the positive test.
In addition, each applicant who has worked for a Department of Transportation (DOT) – regulated employer(s) within the last two years will be required to sign a consent form, prior to appointment, authorizing SFMTA to obtain information from their prior employers concerning their drug and alcohol test history. Each applicant will also be required to provide SFMTA with information regarding whether, during the last two years, the applicant tested positive or refused to test on any pre-employment drug or alcohol test administered by an employer to which the applicant applied for, but did not obtain, safety-sensitive transportation work covered by DOT drug and alcohol testing rules. SFMTA will not hire any applicant for a safety-sensitive position who fails to provide this information or fails to provide written consent for the release of information from prior employers.
