This is a Position-Based Test conducted in accordance with Civil Service Rule 111A. The eligible list resulting from this examination may be used to fill future vacancies in this class.
Role description
Under immediate supervision performs a variety of routine non-professional laboratory duties such as cleaning and preparing glassware and equipment, preparing simple solutions and assisting in setting up test equipment, and performing related duties as required.
The Laboratory Technician I performs the following duties:
- Washes laboratory glassware and supplies using detergents, rinsing acid solutions, and distilled water; dries equipment and stores in proper place according to type volume and intended use.
- Assists with cleaning operations by supplying necessary chemicals, test tubes, bottles, and supplies; sterilizing all specimens, glassware, laboratory equipment, supplies, needles, syringes, and instruments; and cleaning all sinks, laboratory benches, and cabinets where infectious agents may be present.
- Collects infectious waste at each laboratory bench and biosafety cabinet; sterilizes infectious waste in an autoclave.
- Cleans and decontaminates the laboratory as directed or as necessary; maintains an orderly and clean environment; pipettes small amount of reagents into test tubes for specific purposes; makes up percentage reagents for the laboratory according to established procedures and purposes.
- Prepares glassware for microbiological examinations.
- Assists in preparing and dispensing bacteriological culture media for sterilization.
- Unpacks, organizes, verifies and date stamps incoming supplies and packages; records and labels items; transports, stores, and distributes packages and/or supplies or specimens to the laboratory according to established procedures; maintains laboratory inventory by monitoring, ordering, and storing supplies.
- Operates and routinely maintains laboratory equipment; performs mandated routine checks of biosafety equipment such as eyewashes and safety showers.
- Ensures proper use of safety gear and personal protective equipment.
- Writes and maintains simple records of tests and work performed; enters data of patient information prior to testing; enters data on electronic bar code of specimen that enters the laboratory for testing, billing and tracking; generates and maintains digital and hardcopy records of all tests performed in the laboratory; prepares simple laboratory reports.
- Assists in research projects; maintains logs and notebooks regarding research specimens; aliquots specimens involved in research projects.
- Performs related duties as assigned/required.
Location: 101 Grove Street in San Francisco
Shift: Monday through Friday 8 am - 5 pm, some Saturdays may be required
How to qualify
1. Education: High school diploma or equivalent (GED or High School Proficiency Examination); AND
2. Experience: Six (6) months of experience, within the last five (5) years, working in a laboratory setting, cleaning and sterilizing lab equipment, packing, unpacking, and labeling supplies or specimens, preparing glassware for microbiological exams, and maintaining records of laboratory testing or patient information or other similarly related laboratory work experience.
- Experience Substitution: Successful completion of fifteen (15) semester or twenty-two and one-half (22.5) quarter units, from an accredited college or university, which must have included one (1) college laboratory course in Chemistry or a Biological Science can substitute for six (6) months of the required experience.
One year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ): Along with this application, applicants must complete a questionnaire (linked above), which is designed to compare an applicant's experience with the Minimum Qualifications of this position.
Written Examination (Weight: 100%): Applicants deemed eligible will be invited to take an in-person written multiple-choice examination designed to measure knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job-related areas which may include but is not limited to the following:
- Knowledge of: names, uses, and care of standard laboratory equipment and supplies; laboratory methods and techniques including the preparation of common media, reagents, and other solutions; laboratory safety protocols; sterilization techniques; medical and microbiological terminology; proper handling and disposal of infectious materials.
- Skill and ability to: communicate effectively in writing; perform duties according to detailed instructions and established procedures.
The 2402 Laboratory Technician I and 2416 Laboratory Technician II utilize the same assessment. If you recently took the 2416 Laboratory Technician II assessment in October of last year, you have the option to either (a) apply your score to this recruitment or (b) retake the assessment. Please note you are not required to re-take this assessment for the 2402 Laboratory Technician I, and your score will be automatically applied to this recruitment. However, if you decide to retake the assessment, your new score will become your official score since it is the most recent (even if it turns out to be lower than your original score). These options will be restated on the assessment invitation notice.
This is a standardized examination; therefore, test questions and test answers are not available for public inspection or review. Candidates must achieve a passing score in order to continue in the selection process. Candidates will be placed on the confidential eligible list/score report in rank order according to their final score.
Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.

Certification: The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be the Rule of Three (3) Scores.

The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be twelve (12) months and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.
