San Francisco Public Works currently has a vacancy for the position of Public Service Aide – Associate to Professionals within our Pit Stop Program (9922).

The Bureau of Street Environmental Services
Keeps the City’s streets, sidewalks, and other public spaces clean with mechanical and manual sweeping, graffiti abatement, and power washing. The 24/7 operation runs specialized operations, including the Hot Spots teams that focus on encampment cleanups, CleanCorridorsSF, which provides a weekly deep cleaning to neighborhood commercial corridors, and proactive illegal dumping runs in the most impacted areas. The team also supports volunteer programs to advance San Francisco’s cleaning and greening initiatives.

San Francisco Public Works Pit Stop Program
The Pit Stop Program provides monitored, clean, safe, portable, and semi-permanent toilets. Locations also include sinks, used needle receptacles, and dog waste in San Francisco’s most impacted areas. The program emphasizes cleanliness and public safety in the greater Civic Center neighborhood. SF Public Works’ crew will work to ensure the areas are properly maintained and safe for everyone in the designated zones, to reduce harm by making the areas clean and safe for those who live, work, and visit the area. The Pit Stop Program is expanding with the intent to increase the number of portable receptacles, improve the efforts to maintain clean streets, and keep the residents safe.

In this role, you will gain knowledge and experience that will prepare you for a successful future career, potentially starting as a 7501 – General Laborer Apprentice or a 7398 – Apprentice Cement Mason I.

Appointment Type: Temporary-Exempt (TEX), Category 18. This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer. The duration of the appointment is expected to be 24 months.

Role description

Under supervision, as a Public Service Aide, you will perform general administrative and/or management functions in Operations.

Important and Essential Duties:
As a Public Service Aide, your duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Perform administrative and/or assists management with clerical and technical support, planning, and coordinating.
  • Coordinate clerical & technical support activities by assigning and evaluating a variety of clerical/administrative functions, such as data processing, inventory control, distributing or reproducing reports, and performing personnel tasks.
  • Coordinate building security and maintenance, and facilities management.
  • Gather, compile, and analyze data to prepare reports for program evaluation.
  • Assist in the analyses of programs, proposals, and projects.
  • Provide support in investigations of legal matters by preparing legal documents.

How to qualify

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalency test (GED or California High School Proficiency Exam).

License:
Possession of a valid California driver’s license.

Desirable Qualifications: 
The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify candidates advancing to the interview process and/or to identify job finalist(s) at the end of the selection process when referred for hiring.

  • Ability and flexibility to work in a dynamic, time-sensitive environment and to respond quickly and effectively during unanticipated events and emergencies.
  • Familiarity with the City and County of San Francisco’s geography.
  • Passionate about enhancing cleanliness and public safety in San Francisco.
  • Experience working with the public.

The selection process will include an evaluation of applications in relation to minimum requirements. Depending on the number of applicants, the Department may establish and implement additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluate the qualifications of candidates. If this becomes necessary, only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the Department will move forward in the recruitment process.

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ):
Candidates may be required to complete an MQSQ as part of the employment application. This MQSQ is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications (MQ) for this position. The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through all of the steps in the selection procedure.
