The Port of San Francisco is seeking a Student Design Trainee III to join our Planning and Environment team.

Appointment Type: This is a Temporary Exempt (TEX) position with an anticipated duration of up to three (3) years. This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive civil service examination process and incumbents are considered “at will” and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer.

The Port of San Francisco is an enterprise agency of the City and County of San Francisco and is governed by a Commission of five members appointed by the Mayor. The Port Commission is responsible for overseeing a broad range of waterfront commercial, maritime, and public access facilities that are held in public trust for the people of California. The Port’s jurisdiction covers approximately 7.5 miles of waterfront land from Pier 98, near Hunter’s Point in the southern part of San Francisco, to Fisherman’s Wharf in the northern part of the City.

The Port’s diverse business portfolio includes over 550 ground, commercial, retail, office, industrial and maritime industrial leases including cargo shipping, layberthing, excursion boats, ferry boats, fishing and fish processing/distribution, tourism, filming, harbor services, and cruise operations. With some of the most flexible cargo handling facilities on the West Coast, as well as naturally deep water, the Port can handle various types of cargo such as, dry-bulk, neo-bulk, roll-on/roll-off, and project cargoes.

Role description

The Port of San Francisco’s Planning & Environment team works to ensure compliance of Port activity with environmental design and preservation permits, guidelines and standards. In support of this work, the (5383) Student Design Trainee III will develop conceptual graphics and maps of public realm improvement proposals, assist senior staff with the review of regulatory documents for required Port actions, and assist with preparation for and facilitation of public meetings.

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Prepares graphics and presentations using Adobe Illustrator/InDesign/Photoshop, AutoCAD, Microsoft PowerPoint, and other similar software.
  • Conducts site visits and research into existing permits to confirm compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Creates and edits spatial data and dynamic web-based maps to support management of Port GIS databases using in-office and mobile Esri GIS software.
  • Prepares and distributes meeting agendas, invitations and announcements for public meetings and community outreach.
  • Effectively communicates work status with Port staff and external partners/stakeholders via email (Microsoft Outlook), in writing, or in person.

How to qualify

Education: At the time you submit your application, you must be enrolled in an accredited university or a community college in the following related fields: Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, or Environmental Engineering, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Interior Architecture, Architectural Technology, Architectural Engineering, Geography, Planning, Urban Planning, City Planning, Regional Planning, Computer Science/Information Services Program, Cybersecurity Program, Cloud Security, Digital Forensics, Mathematics, Biology, Natural Resources, Environmental Horticulture.

  • You must be returning to your undergraduate program or entering/continuing a graduate program in the Fall 2024
  • Students who will soon graduate are encouraged to apply.
  • You can still apply if you are in your second-to-last or last semester, as you may still be selected for the program within six months of graduation.

Experience: No previous experience is necessary. However, previous internship experience may be used to determine the possible level of classification into which you are hired.

  • Candidates must be willing to learn architectural, engineering, environmental, and planning practices depending on the various city departments and area of interest.
  • Candidates must be prepared to receive on-the-job training to acquire the ability to apply professional standards and develop architectural, engineering, engineering, and planning skills.

  • Landscape Architecture major
  • Minimum of (1) year from attaining bachelor’s degree or graduate degree
  • Strong Adobe Suite knowledge (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign)
  • Proficient in Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
  • Proficient in Computer-aided Design (CAD)
