Public Works currently has a vacancy for the position of Senior Engineer within our Structural Engineering Section.
The Bureau of Engineering
Provides civil, mechanical, electrical, structural, geotechnical and hydraulic engineering services. The group provides a full range of professional services, including program and master planning, engineering analysis and studies, conceptual and detailed design for construction, replacement, and improvements of right-of-way infrastructure (roadways, streetscape, water distribution and wastewater collection system, emergency fire protection system, traffic signals, streetlights, bridges, retaining walls and tunnels); upgrade, construction and renovation of public buildings and facilities (hospitals, schools, laboratories, libraries, recreation centers, City administration buildings and offices, police and fire stations, pump stations, water and wastewater treatment facilities). The team also coordinates disability access and regulatory affairs.
The Structural Engineering Section of San Francisco Public Works - Bureau of Engineering is looking for a talented and self-motivated Senior Engineer to lead a group of engineers and to perform civil and structural engineering work in the field and office related to building, infrastructure, and roadway projects.
Role description
Working with general direction, as a Senior Structural Engineer, you will apply your expertise in civil and structural engineering to plan, design, and oversee engineering projects in the field and office. You will supervise, and mentor other engineers and staff involved in the projects. You will act as the project engineer and ensure that the projects meet the quality, safety, and budget standards. To qualify and be successful in this position, you need to have a solid background in structural engineering analysis and design, as well as experience in structural engineering projects.
The Senior Engineer will be a group leader and lead engineer responsible for a variety of engineering projects, including design of new buildings and alterations of existing buildings, design, and repair of roadway structures (bridges, stairways, retaining walls, tunnels, etc.), design of wastewater collection and treatment system facilities, water treatment plants, and miscellaneous structures such as tanks, piers, wharves, etc. The work requires interpretation of regulations, laws, policies, procedures, guidelines, and standards, and utilizing them in preparation of technical documents. You will be a member of investigation teams responding to earthquakes, landslides, and other structural emergencies.
Important and Essential Duties:
- Developing project work scope and fee proposals.
- Establishing and monitoring design budgets and schedules.
- Preparing structural calculations, technical specifications, construction estimates, contract drawings, and technical engineering reports and other documentation.
- Developing analytical structural models.
- Reviewing shop drawing submittals and responding to requests for information.
- Conducting field investigations and surveys.
- Training and mentoring staff.
- Conducting meetings and making presentations.
- Performing other related duties as required.
How to qualify
Minimum Qualifications
Experience:
Seven (7) years of verifiable professional structural engineering work experience, which includes four (4) years of experience as a licensed professional Structural engineer. Two (2) of the seven (7) years must be equivalent to or higher than a 5241 Engineer (supervising and managing professional and technical engineering staff, consultants, and other related staff engaged in a variety of engineering projects).
AND
License and Certification:
- Possession of a Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California in Civil Engineering.
- Possession of a Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California in Structural Engineering.
- A valid Class C driver’s license.
Desirable Qualifications:
The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.
- Post-graduate degrees in structural engineering.
- Experience as manager of engineering staff.
- Ability to use engineering software programs; maintain an effective working relationship with a variety of people; communicate effectively orally and in writing; and understand, explain, and apply pertinent laws, regulations, codes, and ordinances.
- Knowledge of ASCE 7, ASCE 41, ACI 318, AISC, and CBC is desirable.
- Experience with AutoCAD and REVIT software, Microsoft Office Suite and experience using SAP, ETABS, RISA, SAFE and other structural programs are desirable.
