This is not a permanent appointment. A provisional appointee must participate and be successful in a Civil Service examination for this classification and be selected through an open competitive process in order to be considered for permanent appointment. Role description
Nature of Work: Normal hours would be from 9:30am to 5:15pm Friday to Monday, Thursday from 11:30am to 8:15pm. Applicants may be called for special events and additional shift assignments as needed that could be in the evening to cover parties, weddings, and other events. Hours will be based on operational need and there is no guarantee of work assignment/hours. Applicants will be assigned to shifts at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco (200 Larkin Street. San Francisco, CA 94102).
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, patrols public buildings and grounds to safeguard property against damage, hazardous situations or unauthorized entry; and performs related duties as required. Requires responsibility for: enforcing rules and regulations governing the access to and use of public facilities; preparing routine reports of time and work done; making routine contact with the general public and operating personnel in the patrolling and safeguarding of public facilities; observing and being aware of the surrounding environment and recognizing potentially dangerous situations and reacting appropriately.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Patrols grounds or makes rounds of buildings, punching in on watchman’s clock at various stations; prevents the entry of unauthorized persons on premises; Watches for fire or fire hazards or other unusual conditions; Checks to see if windows and doors are locked and lights turned out; May perform part-time incidental duties such as: operate elevator, relieve on switchboard, park cars and perform minor maintenance and cleanup tasks.
How to qualify
If you are interested in a job like this, we are looking for people that have the following:
- One year of verifiable experience as a security officer; AND
- Possession of a current California Security Guard Registration Card issued by the California State Bureau of Security and Investigative Services; And
- Possession of a High School Diploma or G.E.D. Certificate; And
- Requires possession of a valid state motor vehicle operator's license.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring. 1. Experience working in a museum or at a cultural institution. 2. Experience with the requirements for working near high value art or around fragile and/or valuable materials. 3. Ability to interact with the public and customers in a professional manner.
