The Building Design and Construction Division of San Francisco Public Works, led by the City Architect, provides architectural and landscape design services, comprehensive building planning, project and construction management, contract support and compliance monitoring, materials testing and hazardous materials investigation for the development of new – and the upgrading of existing – civic buildings, facilities and urban landscapes to create a more resilient city.
Public Works currently has three (3) vacancies for the position of Project Manager I (5502) within the Building Design & Construction Division.
Role description
Please read the following descriptions of the exciting projects that will be managed by the new staff members joining our team:
Facilities Renewal Projects:
As a Project Manager I, under administrative direction, you’ll be responsible for overseeing specific aspects of renewal projects for various city facilities. Your role involves modernizing buildings, enhancing efficiency, and improving: City Hall, 1 South Van Ness, 25 Van Ness, Davies Symphony Hall, 1099 Sunnydale, Alemany Farmer’s Market, Castro-Mission Health Center, and various Police Facilities.
San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) Parking and Traffic Enforcement Headquarters & Various San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD) Projects:
As a Project Manager I, under administrative direction, you’ll be responsible for overseeing specific aspects of various projects. These include but are not limited to the following: creating a new headquarters for SFMTA's Parking and Traffic Enforcement Division at 1200 15th Street and various SFFD projects under Earthquake Safety and Emergency Response (ESER) and Public Health and Safety (PHS).
Laguna Honda Hospital (LHH) Simon Theater & Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) Projects:
As a Project Manager I, under administrative direction, you’ll be responsible for overseeing specific aspects of various projects. These include but are not limited to the following: LHH Simon Theater Cooling Center and LHH Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) Replacement.
Important and Essential Duties:
Your duties as a Project Manager I may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Planning, organizing, and directing all phases of the project including but not limited to:
- Assembling design teams.
- Executing solicitations for professional services and construction contracts.
- Selecting project delivery methods.
- Managing the design phase, including design coordination meetings and facilitation of issue resolution in support of the project objectives.
- Facilitating the regulatory approval process.
- Monitoring the project budget, funding, schedule, design, planning activities, and change orders.
- Coordinating work of a multi-disciplinary technical staff across organizational boundaries.
- Supervising and managing Construction Management professionals to ensure the product complies with the contract for construction, codes, and City and County of San Francisco (CCSF) Standards.
- Communicating and working with the public, private contractors, special interest groups, governmental funding and regulatory agencies, and CCSF departments. Serving as a primary contact for all parties involved in the project.
- Conducting onsite visits to job and meeting locations.
How to qualify
Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination of education, training, and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain this would be:
1. Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering, or planning plus four (4) years of responsible architectural, engineering or construction management experience,
OR
2. Bachelor's degree in another field plus six (6) years of responsible experience in a field directly related to the project,
OR
3. Eight (8) years of architectural, engineering, or construction management experience in a field directly related to the project,
OR
4. Valid California registration as a professional engineer or architect.
Desirable Qualifications:
The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify candidates advancing to the interview process and/or to identify job finalist(s) at the end of the selection process when referred for hiring.
- Experience in Office/Administrative building projects, operational/maintenance buildings, major renovations, and healthcare projects.
- Experience in coordinating with Contractors, Construction Managers, Inspectors, and Code Officials.
- Background in healthcare projects under the jurisdiction of Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI), formerly Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD).
- LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) accreditation a plus.

The selection process will include an evaluation of applications in relation to minimum requirements. Depending on the number of applicants, the department may establish and implement additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluate the qualifications of candidates. If this becomes necessary, only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the department will move forward in the recruitment process.
Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ):
Candidates may be required to complete an MQSQ as part of the employment application. This MQSQ is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications (MQ) for this position. The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.
