Role description
Under general supervision, the Senior Parts Storekeeper supervises the operations of a small to medium size storeroom and may also supervise operations of a small off-site storeroom or acts as an assistant supervisor at a large size storeroom. The Senior Parts Storekeeper supervises personnel engaged in storeroom operations for a wide variety of automotive and/or transit vehicle parts and related equipment and materials in support of a maintenance facility.
The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Plan, assign, supervise, review, and evaluate the work of subordinate personnel engaged in ordering, receiving, inspecting, rotating, storing, inventorying, and issuing of automotive and/or transit parts and related materials.
- Coordinate storeroom operations with inventory control staff of a materials management system, purchasing and user departmental personnel and vendors to maintain established levels of inventories; plan and supervise the storage and issuance of all inventories and insure proper rotation of stock.
- Initiate orders to replenish inventories or to acquire as needed non-inventoried parts and related materials; contact vendors regarding specifications, prices, and delivery particulars, and places orders as authorized; arrange for the disposal of obsolete or surplus inventories.
- Supervise the receipt and inspection of automotive and/or transit parts and related materials from vendors; ensure conformance with ordered specifications and receiving documents; coordinate with vendors, freight carriers, technicians, purchasing and inventory control personnel to resolve discrepancies; coordinate the return of defective or repairable inventories to vendors or other facilities.
- Assist in or lead the periodic and as-required inventorying of storeroom stocks and in the validating of stock location records.
- Ensure the safety, orderliness, and security of storeroom inventories, facilities and equipment.
- Ensure compliance with approved operating procedures, policies, and standards by providing effective leadership to subordinate staff via motivation, recognition, proper training, and progressive discipline when necessary.
- Use a computer to write complex reports, performance appraisals, and to access department/division databases such as Mainsaver, Maximo, PeopleSoft, and SFOTime.
- Supervise the maintenance of required files in the storeroom and the proper distribution of stores documents such as requisitions, purchase and delivery orders, packing slips, bills of lading, freight bills, shipping and issue documents, and materials safety data sheets.
- Train storeroom personnel in general storeroom practices, automotive and/or transit parts and related materials, support operations, facilities and equipment safety, and hazardous materials handling.
- Supervise and train storeroom personnel in the use of an automated materials management system for reporting receipts and issues of inventories and determining availability and location of the same via a computer terminal. May enter data and extract information from system files using a terminal.
- Operate equipment and vehicles in the performance of assigned responsibilities.
- May include additional duties as assigned.
How to qualify
Minimum Qualifications
1. Experience: Three (3) years of experience as an automotive/transit parts storekeeper in a storeroom or warehouse, in which the duties consisted of receipt, inspection, rotation, storage, inventory, ordering, and issuing of large quantities of a wide variety of automotive/transit parts and related equipment and materials.
AND
2. License and Certification: Possession of a valid California driver's license.
Supplemental Information
- May require lifting of heavy equipment, parts, and materials up to sixty (60) pounds.
- May involve possible exposure to hazardous materials such as diesel fumes, cleaning solvents, dust, adhesives, and aerosols.
- Requires the operation of hand tools and power equipment used in materials handling, such as pallet jacks, crow bars, and forklifts.
- May be required to work rotating shifts, weekends and holidays.
- All appointees to the position will be required to participate in the National Safety Council Forklift Truck Operators training course, conducted by the department.
Applicants must meet the minimum qualification by the final filing date unless otherwise noted. One-year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.
Desirable Qualifications
The stated desirable qualifications may be considered at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.

- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift for long periods of time.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a flat-bed truck and moving van.
- Experience using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), such as Mainsaver or Maximo.
- Experience working in a large maintenance facility or organization.
- Demonstrated knowledge of best practices related to the methods, procedures, systems and equipment used in modern storekeeping and warehousing operations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Supplemental Questionnaire Evaluation (Weight: 100%): Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be sent a Supplemental Questionnaire. The Supplemental Questionnaire Evaluation is designed to measure the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required for this position. All candidates’ responses to the Supplemental Questionnaire are subject to verification. All relevant experience, education and/or training must be included in the responses in order to be reviewed in the rating process.
A passing score on the Supplemental Questionnaire Evaluation must be achieved in order to be placed/ranked on the eligible list. Candidates will be placed on the eligible list in rank order according to their final score.
Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Clearance:
Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission are required to undergo a criminal history record check, including FBI fingerprints, and Security Threat Assessment in order to determine eligibility for security clearance and may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening. Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1, every applicant for an examination must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for the examination. Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission.
Customs Clearance:
Candidates for employment with San Francisco International Airport require that the incumbent be qualified for unescorted access to the San Francisco Airport U.S. Customs Security Area. An application for a U.S. Customs Access Seal may be submitted to Customs ONLY after employment has commenced. Employment in this position requires that the incumbent submit an application for, successfully acquire and maintain a Customs Access Seal. Per Civil Service Commission Rule 110.9.1, every applicant must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for this examination. Failure to acquire or maintain customs access, a requirement for this position, may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission. Eligible List/Score Report:
A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created, and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved.
