Public Works currently has a vacancy for a Senior Construction Inspector (6319) within the Building Design and Construction Division.
The Building Design and Construction Division (BDC) of San Francisco Public Works, led by the City Architect, provides architectural and landscape design services, comprehensive building planning, project and construction management, contract support and compliance monitoring, materials testing and hazardous materials investigation for the development of new – and the upgrading of existing – civic buildings, facilities and urban landscapes to create a more resilient city.
Construction Management (Buildings)
Provides oversight and quality assurance for building projects during the construction phase of project delivery. By working closely with design staff and constituents on Public Works projects, as well as those of our client City departments, the construction management team strives to ensure that design is successfully delivered.
Role description
Under general direction, as a Senior Construction Inspector, you will oversee construction inspection work performed in conjunction with Public Works construction projects. In this role, you will be responsible for engineering construction inspections including but not limited to the following activities: earthwork and paving, roadway renovation and improvement, water supply and sewer collection pipeline, portland cement concrete, protective coating, pile driving, drilled piers, tunneling/jacking, trackwork, track improvements, power distribution and transmission systems, electrical overhead contact systems, signal, control, and data acquisition systems, radio and telecommunications systems, including fiber optic networks, power substations, vehicle modifications, and retrofits, bridges, ADA retrofits and facilities, building renovation and improvements, operating equipment, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, electrical and mechanical work, and landscaping and irrigation work.
Important and Essential Duties:
Your duties as a Senior Construction Inspector may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Understanding and interpreting contract plans and specifications to administer the contract.
- Performing difficult mathematical computations and applying results to inspection work.
- Assigning and supervising the work of construction inspectors in the inspection of construction projects to ensure compliance with contract plans and specifications, applicable codes, and safety regulations.
- Anticipating workloads and developing staffing plans; training and evaluating performance of staff.
- Preparing and maintaining project documentation and controls including daily reports, force accounts, materials testing, and other construction records for complex and difficult construction projects.
- Participating in and/or conducting planning, preconstruction, coordination, progress, scheduling, and field staff meetings.
- Reviewing plans, specifications, submittals, shop drawings, change orders, constructability reviews, and contract closeout records.
- Resolving disputes and difficult problems and responding to complaints from the public that require resolution at the senior level.
- Ensuring that a quality assurance/ quality control program for each project is developed and enforced.
- Supervising construction inspectors in the verification and preparation of quantity and progress estimates for progress payments and change order work.
- Reporting safety and traffic hazards, defective work, and debris to the contractor for correction and ensuring that the contractor corrects deficiencies.
- Initiating, preparing, estimating, reviewing, and negotiating change orders.
- Driving a vehicle to inspection sites.
How to qualify
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. Two (2) years of verifiable full-time experience equivalent to the level of City and County of San Francisco class 6318 Construction Inspector; OR
2. Six (6) years of verifiable full-time experience in construction inspection work ensuring that plans and specifications are complied with, and the workmanship and material used meet specifications.

1. Most positions require a valid California driver's license.
2. May be required to work under extreme weather conditions such as heat or cold, climb ladders, walk on uneven surfaces and/or stand for a long duration
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT
Valid Driver’s License: Applicants must possess a valid State of California driver’s license with no restrictions that would prohibit them from legally performing the essential functions and duties of the role.
Desirable Qualifications:
The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify candidates advancing to the interview process and/or to identify job finalist(s) at the end of the selection process when referred for hiring.
- Experience in construction management for a governmental agency on building or park projects such as: fire stations, police stations, health centers, recreation centers, libraries, parks, building renovations, elevators, emergency generators, office renovations.
- OSHA-30 Certification.
