Established in 1980 by the Airport Commission, SFO Museum’s mission is to delight, engage, and inspire a global audience with programming on a broad range of subjects; to collect, preserve, interpret, and share the history of commercial aviation; and to enrich the public experience at San Francisco International Airport. The Museum has been accredited by the American Alliance of Museums since 1999 and retains the distinction of being the only accredited museum in an airport. The Museum operates more than twenty-five sites throughout the Airport terminals, including fourteen galleries that exhibit a rotating schedule of art, history, photography, science, and cultural exhibitions. Among the sites is the San Francisco Airport Commission Aviation Library and Louis A. Turpen Aviation Museum, which houses a permanent collection of more than 150,000 objects related to the history of commercial aviation. Job Description

Under the direction of the Assistant Director, Exhibitions, the Curator in Charge of Graphic Design oversees and participates in the planning, preparation, organization, and design of graphic material for all exhibitions at SFO Museum. This position assists in the planning, preparation, organization, and execution of Museum exhibitions; develops and maintains SFO Museum’s website; and interprets and carries out established graphic design standards, methods, and procedures. In partnership with key stakeholders on the Museum’s exhibitions team, this role is responsible for leading design efforts, providing creative direction, and establishing and maintaining the Museum's visual standards to ensure a cohesive visual identity.

Duties will include but will not be limited to:

  • Serves as the primary point of contact, coordinator, and lead graphic designer for all SFO Museum projects;
  • Establishes relationships and coordinates with other Curators and staff in achieving the goals, objectives and priorities of the SFO Exhibition Schedule;
  • Plans, organizes, prioritizes, designs and produces the graphics, images, illustrations, murals, signage, and label content for all SFO Museum exhibitions;
  • Designs and produces 10-15 printed exhibition brochures each year;
  • Develops and maintains SFO Museum website to promote public awareness and to draw interests to the Museum; works with other Curators and staff in selection of appropriate images to accompany the text;
  • Interfaces SFO Museum website with Airport website;
  • Supervises Curator II – Graphic Design, Curator II – Video Arts Curator and Videographer, as needed graphics positions, and graphics interns;
  • Reviews videos produced by the Curator II-Video Arts Curator and Videographer of exhibitions for use in the galleries and for promotional purposes;
  • Maintains and provides project management for all vendor relationships related to graphic design including printing services, banner fabrication, and contracted graphic design firms;
  • Obtains price quotes and prepares documents for contracts with printing companies for graphic production;
  • Provides project scope documents for all contractual graphic design services, reviews contractor proposals, and manages contracted project timelines and outcomes;
  • Prepares and compiles necessary documents in securing funding requisitions in accordance with Accounting and Controller expenditure standards;
  • Organizes and manages the archiving of all digital and physical graphic material;
  • Prepares press kits for all exhibitions;
  • Provides design support for other Airport related projects as required;
  • Promotes events, special programming, and lectures through social media, email, and print to maximize attendance and visibility;
  • In collaboration with the Assistant Director, Exhibitions, and the Director and Chief Curator, defines the scope of special graphic design projects. When appropriate, identifies and engages third-party design firms for contract work, serving as the Project Manager and primary point of contact for the duration of the project.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Desirable Qualifications

 

  • Demeanor suited to a fast-moving and dynamic environment;
  • Demonstrated concern for detail, accuracy, and neat execution of work;
  • Experience with website design and management;
  • Experience with the design and production of printed materials such as exhibition brochures and catalogues, promotional material, case graphics, case labels, and stationary;
  • Fluency in Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Bridge, Dreamweaver, After Effects, and Premiere Pro
  • Experience with HTML and Drupal;
  • Excellent abilities with the Mac platform and products;
  • Knowledge of museum operations and procedures;
  • Ability to plan, organize, implement complex projects;
  • Ability to multitask and problem solve;
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment;
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with volunteers, assistants, supervisor, Museum and Airport staff, outside agencies, and the public.

How to qualify

Education:  Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in fine arts, art history , decorative arts, design, history, library science, museum studies, natural history, science, technology, or other closely related disciplines.

Experience:  Seven (7) years of museum experience including two years of responsible supervisory experience.

One year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Customs Clearance:  This position requires that the incumbent be qualified for unescorted access to the San Francisco International Airport U.S. Customs Security Area. An application for a U.S. Custom Access Seal may be submitted to Customs ONLY after employment has commenced. Employment in this position requires that the incumbent submit an application for, successfully acquire and maintain a Customs Access Seal. Per Civil Service Commission Rule 110.9.1, every applicant must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for this examination. Failure to acquire or maintain customs access, a requirement for this position, may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission. Customs Access Seal requirements and procedures are located in the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 19, Part 122, Sections 181 or 189.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Clearance:  Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission are required to undergo a criminal history record check, including FBI fingerprints, and Security Threat Assessment in order to determine eligibility for security clearance and may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening. Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1, every applicant for an examination must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for the examination. Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission.
