The Early Education Department of the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) provides early childhood education services to young learners, supporting their social, emotional, and academic development. Role description

Under general supervision, performs a variety of cleaning and housekeeping duties in connection with the maintenance of a children's center; assists in the preparation and serving of meals; and performs related duties as required.

Requires the application of simple repetitive manual skills to work involving the use of a few definite procedures in cleaning and housekeeping work and in the preparation and serving of food. Nature of work requires contact with young children and sustained light and/or moderately heavy physical effort with occasional exposure to accident or injury hazards and some disagreeable elements.

Job duties:

  • Assists in the preparation and serving of meals and washing dishes
  • Sweeps and mops playrooms, hallways, offices, lavatories and other areas daily; dusts furniture; empties waste paper baskets
  • Sets up and stacks cots; changes linen
  • Washes toilets daily; washes tables, stoves, refrigerators and sinks in kitchen; washes and waxes floors
  • May include additional duties as assigned

How to qualify

Experience

  • One (1) year of experience in general cleaning and housekeeping duties. License or Certificate
  • Requires possession and maintenance of a current Food Safety certification

Selection Procedures:

After application submission, candidates deemed qualified must complete all subsequent steps to advance in this selection process, which includes the following:

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ): 

Candidates will be required to complete a MQSQ as part of the employment application. This MQSQ is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications (MQ) for this position. The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.

Behavioral Competency Questionnaire: (Weight 100%) 

Candidates deemed eligible and admitted to the examination process will be administered a written exam designed to measure knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job-related areas which may include but not limited to: 

  • Knowledge of methods, materials and supplies used in cleaning and housekeeping work.
  • Knowledge of how to safely handle food.
  • Ability and skill to perform repetitive manual cleaning tasks without continuous supervision.
  • Ability and skill to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability and skill to use cleaning appliances.
  • Ability and skill to some ability to prepare and serve meals.
  • Ability and skill to maintain pleasant personal relationships with other persons and with children.

This is a standardized examination and, therefore, test questions and test answers are not available for public inspection or review.

What else should I know?

Eligible List/Score Report

A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created, and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.

The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be of 12 months, and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.
