Role description
Introduction:
Under direction, performs a variety of difficult and responsible architectural duties in connection with the investigation of building sites, preparation and coordination of preliminary and final working designs and drawings, and the preparation of related specifications for a variety of building renovations and construction maintenance and conversion projects; may plan and assign work to junior and supporting architectural drafting team members.
Important and Essential Duties:
As an Architectural Associate I, your duties may include but are not limited to the following:
- Prepares and supervises the preparation of preliminary plans and detailed drawings for a wide variety of complex construction, conversion and repair projects.
- Develops finished designs of ordinary projects and portions of designs for highly complex projects.
- Analyzes and interprets data, sketches and designs and provides technical assistance to architectural drafting personnel engaged in such work.
- Prepares and reviews contract specifications for various projects; coordinates design activities with those responsible for the structural, mechanical and electrical design phases of such projects; participates in meetings and discussions with representatives of City departments and outside organizations relative to design, specifications, and functional use problems.
- Makes field observations of projects under construction to ensure compliance with contract documents; takes field measurements, documents existing conditions and incorporates data provided by other professionals, such as surveyors and geotechnical engineers.
- Makes, coordinates, and reviews quantity and cost estimates; checks construction submittals to determine if contract specifications are complied with.
- May be required to perform duties in connection with the architectural phases of interior design and construction management; when appropriate applies critical path method techniques to such work.
- Assists in the development and advancement of junior or supporting team members.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
How to qualify
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Architecture or an architecture related field such as Environmental Design or Interior Architecture, or a professional degree in Architecture (Bachelor of Architecture or Master of Architecture) from an accredited college or university.
AND
Experience:
Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in the architectural field including architectural design, architectural detailing, construction documents, programming, preliminary cost budgeting, specification coordination and review, construction administration, and field observation of architectural construction projects, all under the direction of a licensed architect. One (1) year must have been served as a job captain, project lead, or in some role of increased responsibility and supervision on a project. (Experience in a lower-level class (i.e., 5260 or 5261) is considered qualifying.)

License and Certification:
Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
Note(s):
- One-year full-time employment is considered equivalent to 2000 hours (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.
- A valid out-of-state driver’s license is acceptable during the application process. A valid California driver's license must be obtained prior to appointment and maintained throughout employment.

Training and Experience Evaluation: (Weight: 100%)
Candidates that meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in a Training and Experience Evaluation that is designed to measure the knowledge, skills, and abilities in job related areas that have been identified as critical for satisfactory performance in this position, and which may include, but are not limited to:
Knowledge of architectural terms, symbols, details, designing practices, architectural building codes, sustainability and accessibility standards, cost estimates, site development, and design illustration and presentation, visual graphic software ability to initiate, prepare and review architectural plans, specifications, construction administration; and the skills/ability to apply architectural design principles and construction techniques in the solution of complex architectural problems and preparation of contract documents; skill in the preparation of drawings and the use of electronic architectural drafting and/or 3D modeling software for building information modeling (BIM).
The link to the training and experience evaluation will be provided to the candidates via email to the address listed on the candidate’s online application. Candidates will be required to respond to the training and experience evaluation in the time frame indicated and must submit the completed questionnaire as directed to have it evaluated. Responses cannot be changed once submitted. Candidates will be evaluated based on their responses. Candidates must achieve a passing score on the training and experience evaluation to continue in the selection process and will be placed on the confidential eligible list in rank order according to their final score.
Note: Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.

Eligible List/Score Report:
A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores, and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.

Certification Rule:
