The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco are the city's largest public arts institutions and are comprised of the de Young and the Legion of Honor museums. The de Young, designed by Herzog & de Meuron and located in Golden Gate Park, showcases American art from the 17th through the 21st centuries, international contemporary art, textiles and costumes, and art from the Americas, the Pacific, and Africa. The Legion of Honor displays a collection of over 4,000 years of ancient and European art including Auguste Rodin's The Thinker and houses the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts in a Beaux-Arts style building overlooking Lincoln Park and the Golden Gate Bridge. Role description
Appointment Type: This is a Temporary Exempt (TEX) as-needed appointment. This position is exempt from the Civil Service examination process pursuant to the San Francisco Charter Section 10.104 and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer. This position does not have any City health or retirement benefits.
Nature of Work:
- Day Shift assignments only from Tuesdays - Sundays. Incumbents must be available to work the day shift (9:15am - 5:15pm).
- Incumbents must be available to work a minimum of 2-3 days per workweek.
- Incumbents may be called for special events and additional shift assignments.
- Incumbents will be assigned to shifts at the de Young Museum (50 Hagiwara Tea Garden Dr, San Francisco, CA 94118) or the Legion of Honor (100 34th Ave, San Francisco, CA 94121).
- Weekly scheduled shifts are typically made available to employees 3 days in advance.
- Hours fluctuate pending availability and business needs.
Position Description:
We are currently seeking TEX Security Guards to work in an on-call/as-needed capacity. Under general supervision, patrols public buildings and grounds to safeguard property against damage, hazardous situations or unauthorized entry; and performs related duties as required. Requires responsibility for: enforcing rules and regulations governing the access to and use of public facilities; preparing routine reports of time and work done; making routine contact with the general public and operating personnel in the patrolling and safeguarding of public facilities; observing and being aware of the surrounding environment and recognizing potentially dangerous situations and reacting appropriately.
Typical Duties:
The duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code (class) and are not intended to be an inclusive list:
- Patrols or makes rounds of galleries in assigned areas by continually scanning and observing activities; prevent the entry of unauthorized persons on premises. Observe, report, and respond to criminal activity, safety hazards (such as fire, fire hazards, or other unusual conditions), persons needing assistance, etc.
- Gather information, respond appropriately, and act upon it, including handling emergency situations; reporting information; notifying supervisors or other proper authorities; and reporting information in a clear, accurate, and concise manner.
- Using a two-way radio and telephone to communicate.
- Checks to see if windows and doors are locked and lights turned out.
- Observes improperly functioning equipment and reports defects noted.
- May perform part-time incidental duties such as: operate elevator, and perform minor maintenance and cleanup tasks.
- Other related duties as needed.
Other duties required of Security Guards may include, but are not limited to:
- Standing the majority of the shift (5 to 8 hours) on hard floor surfaces.
- Lifting, carrying, and placing 25 lbs stanchions for crowd control.
During the event of an emergency or alarm, Security Guards may perform a variety of duties such as:
- Climbing stairs, moving rapidly in and around the building, bending, crouching, kneeling, twisting, assisting in medical response to accidents, evacuation of visitors from the building, or assisting in the installation and removal of temporary exhibits.
How to qualify
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: If you are interested in a job like this, we are looking for people that have all of the following:
- One year of verifiable experience as a security officer; AND
- Possession of a current California Security Guard Registration Card issued by the California State Bureau of Security and Investigative Services; AND
- Possession of a High School Diploma or G.E.D. Certificate
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.
- Experience working in a museum or at a cultural institution.
- Experience with the requirements for working near high value art or around fragile and/or valuable materials.
- Ability to interact with the public and customers in a professional manner.
- Prior customer service experience.
- Current CPR certification.
