Role description
9920 Public Service Aide – Assistant to Professionals (College Summer Intern)
San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has unique internship programs and hosts interns year-round. College interns will work part-time, up to thirty-two (32) hours per week, for eight (8) weeks. Interns will work directly with SFO Mentors, who will supervise daily tasks and larger-scale projects. This summer, SFO is offering internship opportunities in the following areas:
Safety and Compliance: This office leads the development, implementation, and management of the Airport Safety Management System (SMS). An SMS is a well-defined, systematic, integrated, and proactive safety program. Safety is not addressed by a single department or as a separate entity, but as an overarching way of business. The Safety and Compliance intern will assist the Safety Management System (SMS) team with Risk Assessments through note taking, hazard processing and mitigation implementation. The Safety and Compliance intern will also support the SFO FAR 139 inspection process through data collection improvements, develop new Safety and Security Campaigns through cross divisional teamwork and coordination, and research and summarize new technology, regulations and processes that impact airports.
Learning and Development: The SFO Academy Intern will play a crucial role in supporting the Learning and Development team, serving as an ambassador of continuous learning and innovation. During the eight-week internship, the intern will develop and execute a capstone project focused on organizational improvements such as designing cross-departmental communication strategies, mapping employee experience touchpoints, or creating innovative digital learning modules that enhance workplace engagement and knowledge transfer.
Responsibilities include supporting training center administrative duties, coordinating scheduling and resource management, supporting training initiatives, maintaining the Learning Management System, making strategic recommendations, and advancing professional development programs while becoming a steward of SFO Academy's learning culture. This internship offers a comprehensive opportunity to develop professional skills in a dynamic airport environment, working closely with L&D professionals to engage in meaningful projects tailored to the intern's interests.
Marketing and Communications: As the “MarComm” intern, you will work side-by-side with a creative team of content creators and communicators in a fast-paced and fun environment. You will have the chance to learn and develop front-end website content creation and management skills, front end Drupal management and styling techniques, and how to work with a programming team to take ideas from concepts to published web pages and other digital experiences. You will also have the opportunity to learn and develop skills in social media, video and photo production, creative writing, paid digital advertising campaigns, and search engine optimization.
Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI): at SFO is seeking a dedicated intern to support initiatives that foster an inclusive and engaged workplace. This internship offers hands-on experience in employee engagement, equal employment opportunity (EEO) compliance, and event coordination. The intern will assist Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) by coordinating meetings, events, and communications, support DEI office events such as SFO’s annual Employee Recognition Awards, and provide administrative assistance for the Airport’s EEO program by organizing, copying, and scanning records in compliance with retention policies. Additional responsibilities include managing event logistics, award distribution, and handling confidential employee information with professionalism and discretion. The ideal candidate will have strong attention to detail, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and proficiency in Microsoft applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook. This opportunity is ideal for individuals interested in workplace inclusion, diversity programs, and equal employment initiatives.
Recruitment: As a Summer College Intern at SFO, you will support the daily operations of the Recruitment Team by assisting with candidate outreach, engaging with educational institutions, and helping to oversee recruitment tools and systems. You will contribute to drafting informational materials that promote career opportunities at SFO, participate in recruitment events, and assist with projects aimed at enhancing the candidate experience.
This internship provides hands-on exposure to the recruitment process and offers valuable insight into talent acquisition strategies within a dynamic and fast-paced public sector environment.
Facilities: The Facilities Intern will gain exposure to daily operations by observing routine inspections, basic maintenance tasks, and repair procedures across airport facilities. Under the mentorship of experienced staff, the intern will develop an understanding of preventive maintenance practices and infrastructure upkeep.
In addition to hands-on learning, the intern will also gain experience with the administrative aspects of facilities management, including updating maintenance records, organizing work orders, supporting scheduling processes, and navigating general office procedures.
