Role description

Project: Chlorine Contact Tank Piping Reconfiguration at Sunol Valley 

Under general supervision, performs skilled plumbing work in the alteration, installation, repair and maintenance of water, sewer, process chemicals, fuels and fuel gases, laboratory, and other plumbing systems; and performs related duties as required.

Requires responsibility for: following established plumbing methods and procedures, use of proper personal protective equipment. Must follow established safety practices and guidelines for work in hazardous conditions, sensitive environmental areas, and high security areas.

Work Location: Report to and work out of SFPUC Sunol Yard 505 Paloma Way, Sunol, CA. Dispatched from there to work at any required Water Supply & Treatment locations.

Work Schedule: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Performs plumbing duties in connection with a wide variety of building alterations, maintenance and repair projects and other appurtenant and miscellaneous structures; installs, alters, replaces and repairs plumbing systems, such as water, sewage, drainage, water treatment chemicals and gases, fuel and fuel gases.
  2. Cuts, bends, assembles and installs various pipes, fittings and fixtures for water, sanitary, drainage, heating, gas and other plumbing systems which involve the performance of hand, bench and maintenance plumbing tasks.
  3. Installs, alters, repairs or replaces residential, commercial and industrial plumbing fixtures, including toilets, sinks, basins, and drinking fountains.
  4. Performs annual certified testing, troubleshooting, installation and repairs of backflow prevention devices for the protection of the public water supply.
  5. Installs, alters and repairs valves, fittings and other plumbing parts and equipment, including such items as hot water boilers, sterilizers, laboratory acid waste systems, sinks, thermal control apparatus, irrigation and fire sprinkler heads, hydrants and service pipes.
  6. Installs, maintains, and repairs industrial chemical and gas process piping, equipment, pumps and appurtenances for large and small water treatment plants, pumping stations, and laboratories.
  7. Installs, maintains, and repairs specialty fuel gas piping and equipment such as: low, medium, high-pressure natural and liquefied petroleum gas piping, gasoline and diesel fuels lines, laboratory gas piping and fixtures.
  8. Troubleshoots leaks, uses blueprints and electronic pipe locating equipment in the repair of underground utilities.
  9. Works with engineers on various system alteration designs.
  10. Advises on selection, ordering and storing of plumbing supplies, tools and equipment.
  11. Maintains simple working records, reports, and drawings.
  12. Uses internet, email, mobile devices for communication and information.
  13. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Nature of Work: Involves considerable physical effort and intermittent exposure to working conditions which may produce minor cuts, bruises, and abrasions; somewhat unpleasant physical and working surroundings, such as confined spaces, toxic conditions, and rural environments. Works safely at heights, over water, out of boats or barges, in trenches and confined spaces. Works in public streets, urban environmentally sensitive habitat areas, high security infrastructure locations.

How to qualify

Education: Completion of the recognized Apprenticeship of the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry of the United States and Canada City and County of San Francisco General Plumber Apprenticeship program in class 7465/7466.

License and Certification: Possession of a valid California driver's license.

Substitution:

  • Completion of a recognized five (5) year plumbers apprenticeship program and three (3) years of journey-level experience as a journeyman plumber may be substituted for the completion of the City and County of San Francisco General Plumber Apprenticeship.
  • Additional qualifying journey level experience may be substituted for the required plumbing apprenticeship on a year-for-year basis.

Desirable Qualifications: The stated desirable qualifications may be considered at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring:

  • Knowledge of specialty plastic piping materials and methods, such as PVC, CPVC, Polyethylene, Polypropylene, Solvent, and Butt Fusion Welding.
  • Ability to use computers and mobile devices.
  • Possess and maintain a current recognized Backflow Prevention Tester Certificate and Permit to Operate for San Francisco County. (May be allowed 12 months to obtain certificate if currently not certified).
  • Maintain a current California Water Distribution Operator Grade 3 Certification in order to be available for after-hour emergency call-out standby pay.
