From dawn to dusk help the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department @ Camp Mather create memories that last families a lifetime and throughout the generations!

The Aquatics Division of the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department needs experienced Lifeguards to lead exciting outdoor aquatic activities at Camp Mather located in the High Sierras near Yosemite National Park.  Camp Mather operates for fourteen weeks from mid-May through mid-September, serving approximately 500 guests a week. 

In a setting unparalleled in the West, you can work, live and explore one of the Bay Area’s premier family camp.  Crystal clear lakes, surging streams and quiet mountain forests surround Camp Mather and offer unlimited recreation to visitors. Help us create an enriching, safe, fun-filled outdoor aquatic environment at our swimming pool, natural Birch Lake and Lake Lawn.

As a lifeguard, you will be responsible for guarding the swimming pool, guarding the Birch Lake waterfront, roving the Lake Lawn, instructing guests how to use canoes and stand up paddle boards and of course first aid and lifesaving.  You will also be required to perform in the weekly Staff Talent Show and camp orientation campfire.  You will work six days a week 6.5 hours pre-day and shifts may be broken up.  Please note that everyone, regardless of job title, will be expected to contribute in all areas of camp when necessary.

Role description

Essential Duties:

1.      Patrol and monitor pool activities, facility patrons and swimmers to prevent accidents; identify people in distress or those in danger.

2.      Conduct rescue operations; perform lifesaving techniques; assist swimmers in distress and rescue swimmers in danger; pull drowning victims out of the water; call for emergency assistance; perform first aid resuscitative measures when necessary.

3.      Communicate with facility patrons; caution swimmers regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards; enforce pool rules and regulations; maintain order in and around the pool.

4.      Maintain aquatic facility by inspecting and observing the pool area, lobby, change rooms and deck for safety and cleanliness; preform general pool facility maintenance duties including cleaning and disinfecting pool, lobby, change rooms and deck; may take and record water quality samples in the absence of a supervisor.  Prepare the facility for various aquatic events; handle and store equipment and materials when not in use.

5.      Collect revenue and fees for facility use and participation in facility activities and events; greet and check in facility guests.

6.      Provide customer service; share general information regarding facility operations, programs and schedules.

7.      Prepare incident and accident reports as necessary.

8.      Other related duties as assigned

 Working Conditions at Camp Mather:

·         Housing and Meals: during employment, FREE meals and housing is provided to camp employees. Camp staff live in shared housing with other camp staff.

·         Nature of work includes working both indoors and outdoors, exposure to sun and high temperatures, and will regularly encounter bugs and insects.

·         Work Schedule: The workweek is six (6) days, comprising of small shifts throughout the day. Shifts includes weekends and evenings.  Overtime may be required.

·         Work Location: Camp Mather is located in the High Sierra near Yosemite National Park about 3 hours east of San Francisco.

·         Transportation: Camp Mather employees  are responsible for securing their own transportation to and from Camp Mather. Parking is available for personal vehicles. Public transportation and Rideshare Apps (Uber/Lyft) is not a reliable source because of our remote location.

·         Kitchen staff will be working with various cleaning chemicals as part of the position requirements.

·          This position may require driving a personal or City vehicle.

Available Work Assignments:

Camp Mather operates in three phases. Hiring priority is given to those who can work the high season AND either early crew or final phase crew, in part or in full.

·         April 18 to May 29 (Early Crew)

·         May 30 to August 14 (High Season)

·         August 15 to September 12 (Final Phase Crew)

How to qualify

 

Hourly rate - $22.65 as of January 2022

Two (200) hundred hours of experience as a paid or volunteer lifeguard.

License and Certification:
Current possession and maintenance of the following certifications or the equivalent of:
1. Lifeguarding issued by the American Red Cross or equivalent certified issuing agency;
2. CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer issued by the American Red Cross or equivalent certified issuing agency;
3. Oxygen Administration for the Professional Rescuer issued by the American Red Cross or equivalent certified issuing agency; and
4. Title 22 - First Aid for Public Safety Personnel issued by the American Red Cross or equivalent certified issuing agency.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

1.     All employees must keep current his/her valid Lifeguard Training, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation for the Professional Rescuer / Automated External Defibrillator (CPRFPR/AED) and First Aid certifications throughout his/her length of employment.  Failure to demonstrate/show proof of current/valid certification may result in termination of employment.

2.     New hires must possess the following certifications issued by the American Red Cross and maintain validity of these certificates throughout length of employment: First Aid for Public Safety Personnel in accordance with Title 22 requirements; AND Oxygen Administration.  Failure to maintain valid certifications throughout length of employment may result in termination of employment.

Note - we want to ensure that we are using everyone's time and effort as efficiently as possible.  The City and County of San Francisco is requiring that all our employees be fully vaccinated (14 days after the final dosage) - for Camp Mather, the supplemental form will ask you to certify that if offered the job, you will be fully vaccinated prior to accepting a job at Camp Mather.

Appointment Type
This recruitment is for a Temporary Exempt (TEX), as-needed appointment. This position is exempt from the Civil Service examination process pursuant to the San Francisco Charter Section 10.104 and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer.

Selection Procedures
