About:

The Mission of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is to protect and promote the health of all San Franciscans. SFDPH strives to achieve its mission through the work of two main Divisions – the San Francisco Health Network and Population Health.

This is a permanent position that requires an exam and follows procedures described at https://sfgov.org/civilservice/rule-111a-position-based-testing. Your application can only be considered after you complete the exam.

Role description

  • Assesses and manages the care of patients in a general medical setting or within specialty clinics of the Department of Public Health; takes medical histories; performs physical examinations utilizing diagnostic techniques; evaluates physical signs and symptoms; recognizes and evaluates patients who require the immediate attention of a physician.
  • Performs routine laboratory and screening procedures such as drawing of venous blood, taking cultures, performing and reading skin tests, EKG tracings and pap smears; interprets results of tests.
  • Performs routine therapeutic procedures such as injections, immunizations, removal of sutures, strapping, casting and splinting sprains, and incision and drainage of superficial skin infections.
  • Educates and counsels patients regarding matters pertaining to their physical and mental health, such as diets, social habits, family planning, growth and development, aging, and understanding and management of their disease; facilitates referrals of patients to appropriate health facilities, agencies and resources of the community.
  • Administers treatments and medications prescribed by physicians.
  • Maintains appropriate patient records of histories, examinations and treatments administered; presents pertinent data to the physician.

How to qualify

Required When Applying

  • Possession of a valid Certification as a Physician Assistant issued by the California Board of Medical Quality Assurance.

Desirable

  • Experience with stress testing, discharge coordination, and central line placement 
  • One year of verifiable experience working as a Physician Assistant in an work setting serving a diverse patient population in terms of race, ethnicity, culture, language, sexual orientation, gender identity and socioeconomic status.
  • Demonstrated ability to positively interact with all members of a multidisciplinary team including nursing and medical staff, law enforcement, CPS/APS, advocacy agencies and the District Attorney’s Office.
  • Demonstrated ability contribute to the development of new and innovative programs of care.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with survivors of sexual violence across the lifespan, including experience training and/or working as a sexual assault forensic examiner and/or providing advocacy for survivors of traumatic assault and/or interpersonal violence.
  • Demonstrated experience and sensitivity in working with indigent patients with complex psychosocial and substance use problems.
  • Demonstrated experience working with children in foster care, commercially sexually exploited children (CSEC), children/youth with mental illness, abused or neglected children/youth.

SELECTION PROCEDURES

Training and Experience Evaluation (Weight: 100%) Applicants must complete the Supplemental Questionnaire linked above to complete their application. The Supplemental Questionnaire is designed to measure the knowledge, skills and abilities requirement for the position in class 2218 Physician Assistant. All relevant experience, education and/or training must be included in the application to be reviewed during the scoring process. Candidate responses on the Supplemental Questionnaire cannot be changed once submitted. Candidates will be placed on the eligible list in rank order according to their final score on the Supplemental Questionnaire. The department may administer additional position-specific selection procedures to make final hiring decisions. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed to advance through all the steps in the selection process.

Eligible List/Score Report
A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission. The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be of six (6) months and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director. Upon approval of the Human Resource Director (see Civil Service Rule 111A.26.5), the eligible list/score report resulting from this announcement may be used by other departments that also use this classification or a similar classification. Certification
The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be Rule of Three (3) Scores. Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.
