The Department of Public Health is accepting applications in class 2802 Epidemiologist 1. Under direction of senior Epidemiologist or related research experience staff, the Epidemiologist I implements surveillance, community health assessment, and research plans, uses epidemiologic or related public health evaluation survey instruments, and analyzes data sets to identify and describe patterns of health outcomes and their determinants.
Working hours vary depending on location. Some positions may require working evening, night, weekend and holiday shifts.

Role description
Examples of essential duties of this position include but are not limited to:
- Under the direction and supervision of senior epidemiological staff, the Epidemiologist I carries out epidemiologic and/or evaluation protocols to determine patterns of health, illness, or program efficacy.
- Assists with the design and implementation of survey instruments and study protocols for data collection and analysis.
- Conducts literature reviews and succinctly summarizes key findings.
- Provides quality control of data by assisting with coding, overseeing data entry, cleaning data, and preparing documentation as well as procuring data from secondary sources.
- Creates and/or manipulates databases of original/secondary data and conducts analyses using statistical software packages under the direction of senior staff.
- Prepares data for review in tables, reports, and graphics as directed by senior staff.
- Participates in stakeholder and community engagement for data interpretation.
- Assists with preparing study findings for dissemination and publication and communicates epidemiologic information to multiple audiences (e.g. public communities, public health).
- May assist with preparing project/grant proposals.
- Assists with the preparation of findings for presentation at community and scientific meetings and conferences as needed.
- Utilizes geographic information systems and spatial analysis tools to evaluate and present data.
The 2802 Epidemiologist I also performs other related duties as assigned.
How to qualify
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: Possession of a master’s degree from an accredited college or university; AND
- Experience: Two (2) years (equivalent to 4,000 hours) of experience within the field of Epidemiology performing study design, evaluation or analysis.
Substitution: Possession of a master’s degree in Epidemiology (or a related social, psychological, or biological science) may substitute for two (2) years of the required experience.
One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Selection Procedures
Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (Weight: Qualifying): Candidates will be prompted to complete a Supplemental Questionnaire as part of the employment application process. This Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications for this position. Applicants must also complete the official application. It is essential that applicants provide complete information in identifying their education, experience and training. The Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.
Supplemental Questionnaire Examination: Weight: 100%
Applicants will be prompted to complete a Supplemental Questionnaire during the online application process. Supplemental Questionnaire will be evaluated in relation to the knowledge, skills and abilities required for class 2802 Epidemiologist I. This may include, but is not limited to: knowledge of the principles and techniques of epidemiological research; knowledge of the principles and methods of biostatistics; ability to assist with coordinating implementation of data collection protocol; ability to provide data quality control; ability to manipulate and analyze data; ability to prepare written and graphic compilations; and ability to communicate clearly and maintain effective relationships.
Eligible List/Score Report:
A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.
The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be of twelve (12) months and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.

Certification:
The certification rule used for the eligible list resulting from this selection procedure will be Rule of Ten Scores. Additional position-specific selection mechanisms may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.
