This selection process is being conducted in accordance with the 48th Supplement to Mayoral Proclamation Declaring the Existence of a Local Emergency Dated February 25, 2020 and temporary Civil Service Commission [CSC] Rule 111.17.

Role description
Under general supervision, performs specialized manual and/or desktop-published illustrating and artwork in connection with the preparation of presentation drawings, publications, public information releases and similar media; and performs related duties as required.
Essential duties include:
According to Civil Service Commission Rule 109, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive list.
- Prepares a wide variety of graphs, charts and maps to illustrate and provide comparative information on proposed projects and projects under construction; prepares and designs the format, page lay-outs and typography and executes various types of plain and color art work for a variety of publications.
- Paints and draws illustrations for use of publicity releases; prepares a variety of illustrations for inclusion in departmental reports.
- Does artistic hand lettering and embossing; arranges displays of photographs and drawings for publicity; produces desktop lettering and designs; designs and executes exhibit panels of special projects.
- May be assigned to drafting work in connection with the preparation of construction and landscape drawings and plans.
- May set type for small printing press or be assigned to drafting and map work.
- Takes a variety of photographs to illustrate various projects in reports and displays.
How to qualify
A Category 18 exempt appointment in Class 5320 with the City and County of San Francisco with a minimum of one year of service by December 15, 2022.
Underlying Minimum Qualifications
- Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Graphic Design, Commercial Art, Illustration, or a related field; AND
- Four (4) years professional, journey-level experience in graphic design or commercial art. This experience must include journey-level experience using computer-based desktop publishing (DTP) platform (Mac or PC) with associated scanners, printers, and software.
Substitution:
Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.

SELECTION PROCESS:
Qualified applicants will be ranked on an eligible list according to length of Cat 18 exempt City service and any other qualifying points such as promotive or Veteran’s Preference in accordance with CSC rules. Work history will be verified through City records which will be the final authority.
Eligible List/Score Report
A confidential eligible list of qualifying candidates will be created and used for certification purposes only. A score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection upon request once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this selection process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.
The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be 12 months.
For those candidates that do not have their qualifying 12 months at the time of eligible list posting, you will be placed under waiver on the eligible list and not available for appointment until you qualify. For example, if you were appointed to your Cat 18 position in November 2021, you would be under waiver until November 2022.
