Role type: Temporary Exempt What does this mean?
Hours: Part-time
About:
Who We Are: The first of its kind in the nation, the San Francisco Commission on the Status of Women was established in 1975 by the Board of Supervisors after years of advocacy on the part of the San Francisco women’s community. In 1994, the voters of San Francisco approved Proposition E, which created a permanent City Department on the Status of Women to carry out the policies of the Commission.
Today: The Commission and the Department’s primary purpose is to ensure women and girls equal economic, social, political and educational opportunities within City and County government through policies, legislation and programs.
Three Core Service Areas: As part of a strategic shift to create a greater impact and serve more San Franciscans, the Department has identified three core service areas to catalyze transformative change in the lives of women, girls, and nonbinary people: (1) Health and Safety, (2) Economic Security, and (3) Civic Engagement and Political Empowerment.
Through these three areas, the Department aims to improve the whole lives of our targeted communities, including their health, wealth, physical safety and well-being. Our programming is designed to not just create balance when it comes to the construct of gender, but also to empower women, girls, and gender-nonconforming people with the tools and resources to build pathways to healthy and prosperous futures.
Role description
Working at the intersection of health, safety, socioeconomics, politics and gender, the San Francisco Department on the Status of Women believes that women’s mobility in the United States is determined and influenced by markers of difference like race, ethnicity, class, gender, identity and sexual orientation.
As we work to achieve equity across all indexes in the City and County of San Francisco, and to better understand the experiences of all women in the workforce and in society, we intend to use both gender and racial equity lenses as well as other intersectional frameworks in our research and analyses to help generate effective strategies and solutions that are grounded in the realities of women and families.
To that end, DOSW is calling on the next generation of change agents to participate in a professional internship designed to provide on-the-job training, experience and mentorship in planning and carrying out Departmental activities and assignments.
The successful candidate will be able to effectively communicate and collaborate within teams and is comfortable working on various topics and projects simultaneously. This role will be exposed to many aspects of local government and public administration in service of creating a greater impact for more San Franciscans while building a more diverse and efficient city government through gender-responsive, racially equitable policies and programs.
