About:

The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department currently manages more than 220 parks, playgrounds and open spaces throughout San Francisco, including two outside city limits—Sharp Park in Pacifica and Camp Mather in the High Sierras. The system includes full-complex recreation centers, swimming pools, golf courses, sports fields and numerous small-to-medium-sized clubhouses that offer a variety of sports- and arts-related recreation programs for people of all ages.  Included in the Department’s responsibilities are Golden Gate Park, Coit Tower, the Marina Yacht Harbor, the San Francisco Zoo and Lake Merced.

In 2017, San Francisco became the first city in the nation where all residents have access to a park within a 10-minute walk, a direct result of the Department’s commitment to increasing and improving parkland in the city.  Learn More

Role description

These are general duties for Greenagers (High School Interns) 

  • Learn proper tool usage and safety
  • Learn how to steward the parks of San Francisco
  • Assist with outreach during community events, included but not limited to setting up, breaking down, and tabling
  • Participate in appropriate trainings, lesson plans, and team building activities
  • Participate in recreational activities that involve team bonding such as overnight, kayaking, sailing, etc.
  • Motivate and support each other to encourage a strong working relationship within the team
  • Provide feedback for staff and peer leaders
  • Be responsible of your time in & out and of make-up points for missing days
  • Follow proper City and County of San Francisco  guidelines and procedures

How to qualify

The Greenager Program is a San Francisco Recreation and Park Department and Port of San Francisco Youth Stewardship and Leadership program.  The program was created and designed to offer teens a chance to play an important role in the community by improving the City’s green spaces, raising awareness, creating place-based projects and/or projects based on issues or themes participant’s values and are interested in.  The program is for rising 9th to 12th graders that live in or attend a school in the Tenderloin neighborhood.  Greenagers are trained and provided with multiple leadership opportunities.  They lead public volunteer service projects, participate in the community events, go on fun team excursions and more.

This recruitment is specifically for the future Tenderloin Crew who will start tentatively start work in February 2023 until April 2023.  The pay rate will be $18.75/hour with no City employee benefits as this is an As Needed Temporary Exempt (TEX) Civil Service Appointment.  The general work hours are Saturdays  9:30 am to 1 pm, with some weekdays.  Meeting dates, times and location will be dependent on special events, community events and excursions.

Since the activities of this particular Greenagers crew is centralized within the Tenderloin neighborhood, we are prioritizing candidates who LIVE/ATTEND a school in Districts 3, 5 or 6.

1. You must be in 9th to 12th grade and preferably LIVE/ATTEND a school in District 3, 5, or 6.  Other students in 9th to 12th grade who either live/attend a school within San Francisco may be deemed eligible.

Tuesday - Wednesday  November 29 to 30 interviews - this schedule is subject to change. 

By December 5 - job offers will be issued to the candidates

by December 10 -  those job offers must be accepted - the SF Recreation & Park Department will schedule on boarding appointments in our Annex Office at 501 Stanyan Street - Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 4:00 pm during the week December 15 to 29.
